I have been trying to figure out for the longest time how you jump to a new line (i.e. add a carriage return or line feed) with the Droid X when text messaging???

I've read that with other droids you can hit "shift" + "enter", but we dont have an enter key on the keyboard when text messaging. Instead it is replaced by a :)

Does anyone have a clue on how to do this?

In swype settings there should be an option to change the smiley to an enter key. Mine was already there I thought, or maybe I changed it. The option exists though.

I know it will automatically put an enter button if you are typing in a website for example. But I haven't found out how to do it while texting which I would like to know also.

I use Handcent and there is a specific setting for "action key" either enter button or smile button. I could not find the equivalent setting on the factor text messaging options.

    Download Handcent from the market

I have handcent but I like to use the smile button. I just wish there was a way to change it while typing.

I'm using the multi-touch keyboard and have the :) smiley and no "return" key.

Does anyone know how to get the return key back on sms messaging?

If you set it to default as an enter key you can hit the menu button and there is "insert smiley "..... its almost the same as having to hold alt then press enter and select from a list..... looks like that is going to be your only option

    Bump!

I don't see this option either in the swype settings or stock keyboard settings.

Try using Handcent SMS instead as your default program... to me it has a LOT more features than the regular texting app and it will blend in and become default. It can split messages above 160 characters and theme, which attracted me to it! There is a specific option in there for the smilie or enter key.

Yeah, I've use Handcent before, rather keep it stock.

Ok, it appears that there its no option to change this from the stock settings.

:bump: anyone know how to get this to work on the default (non swype) Droid X keyboard. I don't want Handcent or any other programs at this point in time, I just want it to work with the original keyboard.
