Droid X not that big a deal if you're rooted

Don't get me wrong... I think the Droid X is a VERY cool device. However, I did expect more when I went into Verizon and played with one for about 10 minutes.

Sure, there are some nice upgrades, such as the 8megapixel camera, larger screen, etc... But in terms of smoothness, speed and agility, MY rooted, over-clocked ORIGINAL Droid kicked Droid X's ass. Royally. Now, this particular Droid X may be able to be tweaked to some degree, but my Droid would still out-perform it, no question about it.

No offense to those who like the Droid X theme, but I have my Droid themed and dressed up in such a way that, at least in my opinion, looks much COOLER than the Droid X.

And that doesn't even begin to address the fact that it may be some time before the Droid X is rooted and can be customized at all.

I thought I would have a bad case of phone envy, but I do in fact, have NONE.

I'm waiting for LTE to hit before I do anything.

I looked at a Droid X today in the store and I liked how how you can shoot 720p HD video with it and you have the option of turning on/off the light for shooting video in dark places!

My dad will probably be getting one. His current dumbphone is on its last legs and he needs a new phone and wants a smartphone. The large screen will probably help him out because his eyesight isn't great, but for me, the original Droid is good enough until LTE comes out. Hopefully by then there will be devices with screens even larger than 4.3" and physical keyboards. That's what I want.

i agree with dj. a rooted droid1 is in fact superior to the droid x. my phone is much faster than the x, i can use wifi tether at no additional cost;), and i have an app that will turn on and off my light for night shooting video as well. its true that i cant shoot in 720p but i would not buy a phone as my only means of recording video anyway.
now all that said if they figure out a way to crack the x's bootloader who knows...:)

I have a Droid Orig. I have been jealous of the Droid Incredible because it can project whatever is on its its screen onto a tv through video rca cables.

So I hear the Droid X has HDMI and I'm really jealous. Except now I hear that you can only view from the gallery (shot videos and pictures). WTF? Why are they limiting features with new models?

Since you looked at it in the store, does the camera behave better at least than the stock Droid? My phone theme is pretty awesome and I need a physical keyboard, otherwise I have device envy. I was looking at it at Best Buy but they were just the shells, so I couldn't see it perform.

It's a little big for my taste though.

I didn't know the Incredible could do that.. Does that mean if you have a movie on it, you could watch it on your tv?

I think a screen bigger than that is a little big....its a phone, and it should be small enough to atleast be able to put into your pocket. Otherwise buy a netbook.

Wow, okay, can we please get back on topic? It was just an opinion from both parts, can we drop it and move on?

Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and they all stink.

I guess that just means that I've been spending too much time with my dog and by acting like her, I've been sniffing your butts for too long. Perhaps I am high on the fumes. o_O

I'm interested in all opinions about this device because if I were to buy it, it would be at full price and gentle reminders that it might not be worth it to pay that kind of money for something that won't be able to take advantage of the new network are very helpful at this point. It is so easy to get tempted by the nice big screen.

The Droid X has superior hardware in every way but no physical keyboard.

You won't be able to put custom ROMs on it.

There. Done. Those two statements should allow anyone to decide which they like best.

No, you can't put custom roms on it YET. But I'm sure that with all the smart devs that we have, it's just a matter of time before they crack it.. So I really don't think that should be a determining factor.

It can output any video you load on to it that it can play over HDMI. It just won't stream youtube or the blockbuster app.. In other words not that big a deal..

That's composite video, who cares what it'll output since it looks like crap!

The device you're looking for isn't a phone, and it already exists-it's called a netbook.

Hey Psycho, you're usually a cool cat around here,l and I think you've given some valuable input in the past, but why are you being such a jerk in this thread?

As for my qualifications, no, I'm NOT a developer; I have tremendous RESPECT for our developers - they are the best. Since rooting, I've come up a steep learning curve with all this, and I still have a long ways to go... I'm not a *know it all* as many here really are experts.

I was merely giving an account of my experience with the Droid X. It was obviously my opinion. I gave this opinion because at first I was dazzled by this phone, but after having experienced it up close and personal, came away somewhat disappointed and very happy that I have my original Droid.

I also acknowledged that the Droid X is currently stock, and that if the day comes that it gets rooted, and if it can be successfully overclocked (not all can be easily overclocked, such as the Incredible and maybe the Evo), that it could reach greater heights. However, that remains to be seen, and until it becomes reality, I thought MY rooted and overclocked Droid was a better device at this point in time.

And unless I'm mistaken, one does not need to be a developer to know that if I can customize my original Droid as I see fit (cannot yet with Droid X), and if I can overclock substantially (maybe never with Droid X), and if the better cameras and hdmi are not important to me, that I likely have the better device.

    Don't be so grumpy. :)

Well if you consider the Milestone encrypted bootloader still has not been hacked and it has been out for 6 mos+, I doubt the DX bootloader will be hacked for a long time if ever.

You also have to consider, we have quite a few devs (smart ones if I may add, Pete, Birdman, etc...) already working on it..

The few things that the X have over a rooted Droid would be the 4.3 inch display, hdmi port and camera. If that 4.3 inch display had a higher resolution that would cause me to upgrade.

Add that, a front facing camera, and lte; and I am upgrading. Dual core processor and better battery life would not hurt either.
