So I have had my Ally bout a month and in my apartment I have 232 dropped calls
YES its a basement so I expect les service
I was on the phone wilth Level 2 tec sup this w/e and he made some changes to my phone that did improve it a bit BUT still drop most calls in my apt - I read someplace DO Not Put a Screen protector on an ally it will lessen service is there any truth to this ?
The Vz tec said ever time you drop a call dial ### send that flags the account for dropped calles and he said I may want to wait for 4G phones to upgrade again
Any thoughts on the screen protector ?

i use a screen guard and i have no problem with my service. vzw has just lied to you lol. you just need a phone with a better antenna or have a cell phone tower closer to your basement. you can also try putting your phone close to a window if you have one.

Im not sure, lol. when i was having issues they had me flag the account by dialing ### as well and a week later they noticed there was a problem with the service in my area because 65% of my dropped calls were from my local tower. they called me told me what the problem was and they said they would fix it and a couple weeks later they called and made sure i was having very few if any dropped calls now. this was back in july and august and i haven't had much of a problem since.

LTE (so-called "4G", though it's not quite there yet) will be coming this month, but there will be no handsets until mid 2011. If he just got an Ally, I doubt he's going to want to buy a (almost definitely expensive) LTE phone at retail in 6 months, *if* his area is one of the metro areas getting LTE. And is LTE going to change anything with voice anyway? I didn't think they had voice working well over LTE yet.

I doubt there's much you can do in a basement. Sometimes these structural things really affect our service. There's the extender: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/accessory?action=gotoFemtocell but unfortunately it's expensive.

Verizon's press release about LTE said that data will be 4g and calls will be 3g until they can fully upgrade everything.

Calls have never been 3G. Verizon's 3G is EV-DO: originally Evolution, Data-only, later changed to Evolution, Data-optimized. Watch your screen when you place a call---3G disappears.

I stand corrected---on the Ally (maybe on Android in general) the 3G symbol sticks around. My other phone, it does not.

However, I still maintain that calls are placed over the 2G network, not 3G. EV-DO was never built to support voice (there was EV-DV which did, but it never went anywhere).

thanks for the tip death. i'll give that a try. my ally has been dropping calls all over the place lately, but mostly when at home. i can have a strong signal one moment, and then lose it completely the next.
