This is makin' me flippin' nuts:

    1. I add an account or two (POP3 or IMAP) to the built-in Android Email or Android Market K-9 app,
    2. The non-GMail e-mail works mostly OK for some time (a day or two, an hour or two, etc.); (I do get connection errors, I can't completely delete POP3 email, there's no POP3 auto-checking nor notifications, etc.--for now these annoyances are manageable.),
    3. At some point in the future, I go into the app to check mail, and POOF! Everythin' B gone. I'm greeted with the setup screen, as though I had not created the account(s) previously,
    4. I recreate the account(s),
    5. GOTO 2.

    It's gettin' old...

    WTF? Any clues here?

Does this happen to others. I see only one email from email app?
    Is that normal?

How is that related to the Title "E-Mail app randomly(?) deletes accounts" on my original post? I made the post because I'm having a real problem for which I'm hoping I'll receive a real solution. If the thread migrates to 'Yeah, my e-mail does some other stuff unrelated to this discussion,' then "E-Mail app randomly(?) deletes accounts" quickly becomes forgotten, and a solution is never presented.

Let's stay on track here. New topics can be posted in new threads...

    Something else I just discovered:

After recreating the two accounts yesterday afternoon, I found them deleted a few hours later. Crap.

This morning I recreated one of the accounts with the same settings, preferences, etc. When I looked in the Trash folder I found all of the e-mails that I had placed there prior to the account disappearing. So, some of the settings/attributes are being retained somehow.

    Thoughts?

    Another interesting bit:

After both accounts disappeared (again), I decided to recreate only the Gmail account (it's not the primary Gmail account the main features of the phone are tied to). It automatically gets set up as IMAP. I had not set up only the Gmail account in any of my previous attempts. However, I had set up my ISP account as the only account many times.

That account has 'stayed' on the phone for three days now--no disappearing. Neither account had 'stayed' on the phone for more than a day or so previously.

So, it appears that setting up my ISP e-mail account (as either POP or IMAP) is a trigger to cause both accounts to disappear from the phone.

    Double WTF?

Yeah, I had this happen to me several times after configuring two emails (not gmail). After I rebooted the phone it vanished. Had to do it all over again. It doesn't make any sense. My emails did work while it lasted but like I said, the accounts got deleted. Both were pop3. I went to TMobile to try and explain and they looked at me like I was from another planet. I think I'm going to find another email client to use. By the way K-9 did the exact same thing!!!

Yeah, I wouldn't expect anyone that's customer-facing at T-Mobile to be any help. They just ain't trained to do this sort o' thing. And as soon as they get wise enough to answer that sort of question they get the #$%! away from customers...

Both the built in 'Email' client and 'K-9' exhibit the same behavior for me as well in this context.

UPDATE: The Gmail account I recreated has been on the phone and functioning without issue for 13 days now. I still haven't figured out why. I'd sure like to add my ISP POP account back, but I guess I'll have to wait for an OTA update (?).

Any news on this error? I lost the configurations of my 2 email accounts twice. This happened two times with K-9 and also two times with DAmail. I do not know if the error lies with the original program (since both of them are forks of it) or if the problem lies with having both of them installed?

    Cheers, jrrp

No, nothing new I know of. I'm still seeing this behavior with K-9 0.22. As long as I don't try to add my ISP's POP account, everything works as expected. If I add the POP account, all accounts will be deleted in the near future. I can't figure out what it is about the ISP account that causes the deletions. Is it because it's a POP account? I don' know.

Yes, I believe the bug(?) is actually in the Android default Email app, and since K-9 is built on top of (or forked out of) Email it behaves the same way.

I suppose we have to wait for a bug fix from Google, or if there's an enterprising young developer out there...

Well, this I can tell: It is not because you add a POP account. I have added two IMAP accounts the first time and one IMAP account the second time. Both times the account settings were deleted. So this happens both with POP and IMAP accounts and it happens with one or more additional accounts.

I would definitely call this a bug and not a feature ;)

It is really a shame for Google that IMAP works so badly. I am very grateful to the developers of K-9 and DAmail. Hopefully their efforts are considered and included by Google in their next release. After all, being open source was for me the main reason for buying the G1.

Hopefully the K-9 or DAmail developer visit this forum. After all, if they dont know about the bugs, they cant fix it!

    Cheers, jrrp

Update: The account configuration only gets deleted if both email programs K-9 and DAmail are installed. I uninstalled K-9 and DAmail has not lost the account data. It seems that both programs cannot (should not) be installed in parallel. I do not mean running at the same time, just being installed on the same phone leads to the user data loss. Anyway, according to http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/board/message?board.id=Android2&thread.id=5583, it seems that the K-9 and DAmail are merging their efforts - this would be great!

    Cheers, jrrp

I wish my difficulty with this magical-deletion-of-all-my-email-accounts thing was the same as yours. That's easy enough to fix. However, I'm experiencing the problem with just K-9 installed. I've not even looked at DAmail, much less installed it.

I also experience the problem in the Android Email app when K-9 is installed, but I can't recall at this point if it happened when Android Email was the only e-mail app on the phone. So I uninstalled K-9 and set up the two accounts in Android Email to test. Will update.

N.B.: I've not set up an account(s) in both apps simultaneously, and then accessed e-mail from both apps. That's crazy talk...

This started happening to me too over the past week. For the first month or so of usage, everything was fine. I had originally created two IMAP accounts and a POP account with the stock email application and then switched to k9 since it's a much better program. Suddenly one day a month later, I found that all my accounts were gone -- both in k9 and the stock email app. I recreated the accounts (in k9 only this time) and then three days later, again, the accounts disappeared.

The only variable that I can think of is that it's related to roaming from my home area. For the first month of usage, I was in my home area. When this problem first occurred, I had travelled up to the mountains. Then, when I returned to my home area, I observed the second instance of losing my accounts. I am curious to see if the accounts stay put now that I'm back in my home area, though I'm not too optimistic since this theory seems a bit far-fetched.

    UPDATE:

A week ago I uninstalled K9. Next, I set up both e-mail accounts in question in the Android Email app. They've been fine for a week--haven't been deleted once. Problem is with K9? Or, problem is having both apps installed? I don' know; I'm lost at this point...

Following your postings I dared to install K-9 again. I have now DAmail 1.11 and K-9 0.31 (the latest versions, I think) both installed. They work both OK and both keep their user data *fingers crossed*. Besides, I am abroad and away from my home network T-Mobile UK.

    Cheers, jrrp

I'm a bit late to the thread, but I've been having these same deleted mail account problems with my G1... since I first set it up!!!! I've done 4 HARD RESETS/FULL RESTORES, I've tried DAmail and K-9 and have even had T-Mobile replace my G1, but the issue continues...sometimes it's days, sometimes it's minutes, but eventually I return to whichever program it is, and all my accounts have been deleted!!! WTF (x infinity)???? I have two standard gmail accounts and two work accounts. And, it seems to me like they can't coexist in the same app. So, I tried putting the Gmail accoints in the Andriod email, and put my work accounts into K-9, and sure enough, when I went back to my regular Gmail accounts in the Android email app, they had been deleted. So, thinking that the K-9 app would fare better, I added my regular gmail accounts on top of my work accounts and --- sure enough --- when I went back to K-9 after adding the regular gmail accounts, all four accounts had been deleted from K-9! AAAAAAARGH....So, here's my next experiment...I'm gonna' leave just my work email accounts on K-9 and NOT add my regular Gmail accounts and I will report back and tell you guys what I find. Hopefully between us we can find a way to cope with this b.s. while Tmo and Google work to fix it.

I have discovered my pop3 will download all my email from the server but I can only SEE the latest one. All of them are there, just all but one are 'invisible'. If you use DAmail which has a counter for the number of email in the inbox, you'll see what I mean.

Well, it happened to me again without any network changes, which proves that my far-fetched theory about switching from home area to roaming networks is not the cause. Also, for those wondering if there is some conflict between the gmail app and the other email apps causing the problem, I don't believe that to be the case either because I don't even use my gmail app -- and certainly don't attempt to configure the same account between the two apps -- and have the google sync features disabled.

As much as I like k9 and think it is far superior to the stock email app, I may experiment with uninstalling k9 and trying to make do with the stock email app for a while to see if k9 might be the problem.

Only to mention that this bug affects DAmail, too, and that both K-9 and DAmail are forks of the basic email client of the G1. Since until now K-9 and DAmail were independent projects, it seems very strange to me that two independent projects introduce the same bug. I therefore suspect that the bug is within the common base of the G1 client (even though it doesn

Well, I'm at 10 days and counting with K9 not installed, both accounts set up in Android Email app, and both accounts are still there. I guess I'll wait for an update to K9 that acknowledges addressing this entropic feaure.

10 days and counting for me as well. I have my two POP (IMAP) accounts set up in K-9 and I still have not added my regular Gmail accounts. Instead, I've just been using the built-in Gmail for my main Gmail account and just not checking my secondary Gmail account at all. I am guessing that the moment I try to add my primary or my secondary gmail account to K-9, I'm going to lose all the K-9 accounts. So, I'm gonna' run a few experiments and let you all know what I find. For the record, here are my 2 planned experiments...Experiment 1: Open the Basic Email app and add the secondary email account, so that it's by itself. Experiment 2: add the secondary Gmail account to K-9, so it's with the two POP (IMAP) accounts. My guess is that in both cases, the accounts will be deleted...but we'll see! Back soon...

Although I was planning to uninstall K9 as a test, I didn't end up doing it, and after about 9 days since the last occurrence, just as I was about to report the lack of problems, it happened to me again (for the forth time). That was a couple days ago. Jrrp has a good point that it would seem more likely for the bug to be in the base Android email app since both K9 & DAMail exhibit the same bug and both were independent forks of the common base code. Although there's no reason to be optimistic, I just upgraded to the new merged K9/DAMail release and am very pleased at least with the continually improving feature set -- so pleased, in fact, that I just can't give it up for the lame base email app. I don't expect that this bug was magically fixed by the merge, though, since it wasn't noted and had existed in each project separately. What does give me hope, though, is the new upcoming Android cupcake branch release, which supposedly includes a large set of fixes & enhancements to the base email app. I also see that there is at least an attempt to get the K9 & DAMail features merged back into the base app.
