i just replaced my droid because of loose battery door and freezing and this replacment seems to be perfect but when on a call to me it seems like the earpiece speaker seems to be lose or something.. i hear crackling sounds when the volume is on high, has anyone here have the same issue or is this normal. i dont feel like exchanging it again lol

When I activated my Droid I had to call in to Customer Support because of some other account issues, when the rep called my Droid to verify that it was accepting calls it had a clicking noise in the background but I haven't had it since. I think it has something to do with calls that are routed through a service because I also got a weird noise in the background when a buddy of mine used the Google Voice website to call me.

On every call so far I have heard a very low ticking noise. Almost as if you had your ear to a watch, but twice a fast. Is this what everyone is talking about (besides the crackling) or is this something I should possibly have the phone replaced over. It's just loud enough to start driving me crazy.

    tux,

I have this same issue. I took my 2nd Droid (first was replaced due to a camera issue) in this weekend. Well 3 service reps listened and couldn't hear it, the manager listened and couldn't hear it, and finally after a bit of firmness on my end the manager swapped me to a new phone. I did a test call from the store and didn't hear it, but all be dammed, when I got home my new Droid does it too. My first Droid did not do this, and my wifes Droid does not do this. My wife however cant hear the tick, do we just have sensitive ears, or do these other people not know what to listen for? I am not sure if I'm gonna take this new one back just yet. I think I may wait a few more weeks so they get a few more units out of the factory. My original Droid (and wifes) was a 40/09. The 2nd Droid was a 39/09 and I could tell a big quality difference between the 39 and the 40, 40 was way better. My newest Droid is a 44/09 and it is the best yet. I am thrilled with it aside from the speaker tick.

I'm glad I'm not crazy / have the only phone doing it.

So my manager can also hear it, and noticed you can also hear it, just a little more muffled , elsewhere from the phone. It's something electrical, because speakerphone doesn't make it louder. As far as replacing it,I think I'll do the same, I'm going to maybe wait until day 29 and go to Verizon, or wait even longer and then put in an RMA with Motorola. The reason I would like to do it at Verizon is to try it out before leaving and see if I can hear it.

    Keep me updated with yours!

learn from my mistake and listen carefully at the store, the tick on my new one is fainter then my old one, therefor in my quick store test i didn't hear it, but i hear it now for sure =(

I wonder how many phones are plagued with this issue and how many people actually have the ears to hear it...

I believe it's going to be ( that is if it is indeed an issue with many ) one of those things that as more people hear about it , the more they will actually notice it and go "oh wow yeah I hear it too now".

It's strange because sometimes I notice it so bad I want to end the conversation ASAP. This morning I almost thought it was gone , but I eventually 'found' it.

I would probably settle for it being barely noticeable ( to us ).

I'm experiencing the tick as well, on my roommates phone. I'm considering buying a Droid, but the constant ticking would drive me insane if I used this device to place lengthy calls (it is a phone right?)

Even though it sounds like a mechanical or electrical noise, I've heard toggling the speaker phone on/off during a call fixes audio quality issues, so you might give that a shot. I haven't had a chance to try this on my roommate's Droid, however. There's also that Dec. 11 update around the corner. Could you post back here and tell me if the issue seems resolved after the update? I'll put off buying my Droid until then. Thanks!

Will do, I thought my newest Droid was better, but now it seems to be ticking just as loud as the old one....annoying! I'll see if the update does anything to fix it, but I'm not to optimistic though. Also, toggling the speaker does nothing, neither does going to a BT headset and back...

My droid has just started doing this, as well. I got mine on launch day and my calls were perfect until last night. Id be interested to know what the cause is. I might not want to cancel black tie protection after all...

Sorry, mine still ticks. I was hoping 2.0.1 would fix it since we know the tick goes away when the phone is slid open to make the backlight come on while on a call. Maybe 2.1 will fix it? Who knows...I may bring it back sometime before my 1 year warranty runs out, but everything else on this phone is so solid I don't want to bring it back for the tick...

My previous 2 phones were plagued with a bad camera and a loose slider....

Where I work, there is a lot of metal dust. I used to use a magnet to clean the metal off the speaker but it pulled the speaker to far out and ruined the speaker and started making that sound. New phone fixed it LOL

Use the Verizon replacement crap plan for this issue. This was the only thing wrong with my phone but I couldn't take it anymore so after some arguing to try and get a retail new Droid, I gave in accepting the warranty replacement. For those of you unaware, Verizon has this wonderful:rolleyes: " Like New Replacement" system.

Well , 'Like New" my shiny metal android arse! The phone was obviously a broken screen that was replaced, the LCD is not set right causing white light to bleed through from the bottom buttons, and a strange bluish tint on the rightmost side.

    AND IT'S STILL TICKING! :mad::mad:

I'm out of ideas besides going down to the Verizon store and refusing to leave until I walk out with AT LEAST a new Droid with only the ticking to worry about.

I've also experienced when the volume is set to max, a crackling / staticy noise. It's definitely annoying :( but not necessarily a deal breaker for me.

I have the same issue. When the volume is raised higher (say one or two clicks from max), I get the crackling, static-like sound when on the phone with callers. It's odd because the phone didn't do this in the past. I'm wondering if the earpiece speaker has simply gotten slightly damaged over time. I'll try running pressurized air over it to clean it out and see if the issue is resolved.

I had this problem with my first Droid. I always had the incoming call volume at max with no problems, then after about three weeks it developed a crackling noise. I took it in to Verizon and they told me some bs and a tech looked at it and the crackle actually went away. The very next day it came back and I went back to Verizon and the tech gave me some more bs about how I should use a task killer and that would help.

At this point I was getting very pissed and called him out about it and ended up getting the phone exchanged. Haven't had an issue with the new phone.

Yep thats exacalty what I have been noticing for the past 2 weeks on my 003 Evo and its pissing me off as well. I would like to know if its a hardware issue which I really think it has to be. Has anyone got any more info on this I would like to fix this since this really is the only thing I can complain about on my Evo.

Now what doesnt make Sense is the fact that any type of Music played from a player or the stock player sounds amazing crystal clear. So something has be going down with calls because thats the only time you hear it.

I think it was the network because mine got mysteriously better after a 'factory reset' and hasn't troubled me since.
