This sucks! I was eligible to upgrade to the Captivate up until today and now im not. If I did not have the 6gb for $30, I would be saying goodbye right now.

You're better off without a contract anyway but this is just one more reason.

The 6GB deal is fine and you don't need a contract. (oh, do you need a contract for that data plan?) I'd even drop down to *only* the $30 data plan like the old days except it's data and you can do SIP for voice. Or a tablet. Or a MiFI/tether. whatever, for a lot less than a contract.

I just lost my upgrade to get the captivate today as well. I am seriously NOT HAPPY!!!

Told for two months I could upgrade, waiting forever for it to arrive... Turn down my waiting list iphone 4...

But I can still upgrade to an Iphone 4 if I want. Thats when I lost it! I can get a more more expensive phone but not a cheaper one. I asked for my cost to buy out my contract and will be talking to retentions once the phones out. I either get a captivate or I leave...

That's what I did yesterday. I talked to a retention rep saying that I wanted to cancel my contract. When asked why, I told her that it is unacceptable to treat long-time customers like that. It would cost me about two months of what I usually pay to get out of my contract. She proceeded to tell me that in some cases, the additional delay can be bypassed, that in my case, they could make an exception. So she added a note to my file that I can HUP to the captivate as soon as it is released.

I'll be sure to call back Monday (as I heard it would be released on Monday) to get my HUP.

I don't think this is right to do this on all existing contacts. When I asked recently, I was told for smart phones we are eligible for hardware upgrade after 2 years. To just change it to 3 years really sucks.

I just got off the phone with retentions. They are going to honour the hardware upgrade. So as soon as the captivate is officially released I am to call them back, give them my reference number and they'll ship the phone to me. All I have to do is agree to a new 3 year term and pay $150.00

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was to get retentions to allow the upgrade on my account. Its almost as if they are doing this on purpose. Make the changes and if anyone calls to complain (or in my case call to see how much to buy off my account) they just grandfather...

So if the 25th is the actual day the phone is released it will be interesting to see if everything goes through as planned. Keeping fingers crossed.

And you honestly think that Bell or Telus are any better?

I've been through the same at all three... I'm still beyond furious at my last phone through Bell. I called to quit (after contract as I got the iphone with rogers back then) and they talked me into staying at a really cheap rate. I thought that it could be a good emergency phone for the wife. I decided to quite a short while later as the phone wasn't being used only to find out that the sob locked me into another 3 year term...

Somehow I don't recall ever being told I was locking in, and since I couldn't prove I hadn't they refused to deal...

These guy hold all the cards and they know it!!!

Well I hope some of you guys have better luck. I am an inch away from buying out my contract.

Retentions told me to call today and set up getting the captivate. So figuring that I would have a lot of competition I got up early and called them at 6:01am est. I was told that I had to wait until 8am to call back since I was using retentions to get the phone.

So I call back at 8am and after 15 minutes of arguing to no prevail I still do not have a phone. They have the phone for standard upgrades but not for retention upgrades. There is no time line for when that option might become available so I am supposed to keep calling back... However if I want to pay 499 I can get the phone shipped today. Why would I want to do that when I can get the phone (eventually) for 150?

Seeing as I am up at an disgusting hour I may just get back on the phone and speak to retentions again. Not like they will be at all helpful...

And to add insult to injury I called back to speak to retentions / a manager. My reference number didn't have a price attached to it, just that I was allowed an upgrade. So what price point does that get me? They couldn't answer and put me on hold to speak to their manager.

The final story (so far) is they will call me when the phone becomes available for retention hardware upgrades. They can't answer the price point as its not in their system and all I can hope is that they put some note on my file for next time. On to my next reference number....

I love how every time I talk to them the story is completely different and theres no / little mention of what was discussed or agreed on in an earlier call. grrrr....

Another example of miscommunication: I called to get my HUP this morning, and the rep told me that the phone will be launched only on Wednesday, not before that. I told her that the Retention rep told me, on Friday, that it would be available today. She said "i know, but we won't have any until Wednesday".

At least, I made sure I will be able to get my HP via retention. It seems only a few people can get a HUP that way. All regular HUP will be directed to the Rogers stores.

This whole fiasco def. rates as the worst launch of any product in the history of Canada, if not North America. Hard to believe someone could do a worse job then whats happening...

Is it that bad overall? Remember that the pissed off customers are on contract and will continue to do so plus they are a minority of users so to R it isn't unexpected. This device is a major success by the numbers so to piss off a handful of people for the chance to gain a lot more suckers is all part of the calculation. There is a huge untapped market and that is what they are going for. Same for Win 7 phones. The existing customers are treated like they always have been, this isn't new.

But I'll say it once again, this device might disappoint a lot of folks just like it has all over the planet. Great spec on paper but in your hands it is far less appealing once you bump into the issues that are still there and no doubt will be no different with this one. unless.... it comes with the fixed 2.2 which will be a major coup on their part if the update actually fixes things. Or.... there will be a lot of screaming for the next 8 months trying to pressure someone, anyone, to push an update.

I know that I'm in a tiny minority but this is the device that begs to be bought outright with no contract to frustrate you for years to come. I'd say to wait, you'll be sorry a lot faster than you were with the Magic. Let's see how long it takes for the bitching to begin..

On the phone right now... Hopefully for the last time...

Update: Talk about painless! No arguing, They just got the job done! 149.99 plus 35 admin fee (Normally I'd fight that too but whatever) and its on it's way via UPS. I'll have it in 2-3 days.

Update 2: And I already have a shipping confirmation email from Rogers!!!

Now once I see my bill and they haven't screwed that up I can call this over.

It ain't over for another 3 years.....
I paid $500 a few months ago and won't have to worry about what R or other carriers do. But I'm also free to sell this thing if it doesn't get a much better update in a few weeks.
