Enabling Wifi Hotspot on Stock S4General

    Hello
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with Stock Android 4.3 installed. Everything works great and I can use it on WiFi etc. Today I went to enable the Wifi Hotspot (as I always did with my S2) and I set it up and all looks great. I then went to my Tablet and set it up to connect to the S4 and it did - obtained an IP - but I cannot connect to the Internet. I also set up my laptop to connect to the S4 and it get an IP as well did but it also cannot connect to the internet.

    Am I missing something? Thanks

If my stock software does not support tethering then why are the settings in there? I don't understand your answer.

You didn't understand the answer cause i said if the app doesn't work . But also if the settings can be seen now think to yourself what if you wasn't on a unlimited service plan and you had enable the setting your data will be ate up . BUT AS I SAID BEFORE DOWNLOAD THE TETHER APP . and see if it works .

I cannot find an app called Tether. What one are you talking about? (no need to worry about what data package I have - it's unlimited)

beach, who's your carrier? Do you have unlimited or a data plan?

Unlimited - I also can use the same SIM in another device and the WiFi tethering works just fine - so I know it's not a carrier issue for sure.

Wow you answered your own question . And it wasn't a apk called tether . Its many apk that you can use . You was to go into the playstore and inside the search engine you was to put tether . But as you see you a problem is keeping you from the fix

Again, who is your carrier? Sprint is about the only major provider left that still offers unlimited data. I have the same problem with my S4 and had the same problem with my old Nexus S. With Sprint, on the unlimited data plan, you have to pay an extra monthly fee to have access to Wifi hotspot feature. I tried about 4-5 different hotspot/tether apps (open garden, PDA net, Foxfi, others) and as soon as I hit the 'enable wifi hotspot' the phones internet connection just shuts off. I created an adhoc setup on my pc using Foxfi+pda net (usb tether), and a wifi dongle. Worked fine for my apple devices but, stock Samsung devices do not recognize adhoc wifi. You may have to root your phone and flash a custom rom. There is always Bluetooth :(

I do have a custom rom on it so my Android is now Stock Android. I know my carrier is not the issue because I am able to use the SIM in my S2 and tether WiFi there.

    beach40 said-"I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with Stock Android 4.3 installed."
and-"I do have a custom rom on it so my Android is now Stock Android."

Now I'm confused. If you have a custom rom, you are not stock. If you did not ROOT the phone, you do not have a custom rom. You can ROOT the phone AND have a stock rom. In any case, your reluctance to provide your carrier somewhat limits the information that others have to work from to provide a complete response. If you can swap the SIM and it all works on your S2, it is more than likely a firmware issue. Try some of the hotspot/tether apps I mentioned in my previous post and if that doesn't work, just use your S2. I'm out.

    Carrie is Rogers.
I tried the FoxFi app and I can connect to the phone but not able to surf.

Canada? The easiest way to find out is to contact your provider (I know that sucks) and tell them you are trying to activate your wifi hotspot, and it will not work. More than likely, their response will be, that costs extra. Over the last couple of years, android firmware updates have given the ability to enable wifi hotspot activation to the carrier. With an unlimited data plan and free wifi tether, these companies can potentially lose their a**. Thus the extra fees. Either pay, or root.

since you are rooted you need to install the hotspot mod. end of story

    SOLUTION!!!!
There were 2 settings on the phone for 2 different APNs. When I deleted the one not being used (checked to make sure I can surf on the Android Phone) then enabled WiFi HotSpot ALL WORKED!

It was NOT a carrier provisioning issue NOR did I have to install a third party WiFi Hotspot APP (they only use the Android configurations anyway).
