"Even with great choices like the Incredible and EVO 4G on the market, like we said on last week's Engadget Show, there's never been a better time to wait on a new mobile purchase." - quote taken from this article on some new phones coming to Verizon, eventually: Motorola to launch two smartphones on Verizon in July, says WSJ -- Engadget

Do you agree with the Engadget writers? There are some cool phones coming out soon. Do you think you acted too soon? It would be too bad to be stuck with something you don't really want, just cause you wouldn't wait a few months.

Personally, I think the Incredible represents a watershed moment in smartphones. From this point on the rules of smartphones don't apply. You'll need to get a new phone every couple years, and take care of what you have to make sure your equipment runs cleanly. Phones aren't going to follow the rules of phones anymore; they are going to follow the rules of computers.

The Incredible is a grossly under appreciated step forward in technology. It represents the beginning of a time when a smartphone is no longer a gadget to be outdone a few months later (sorry EnGadget), it is a computer, and is capable of anything.

Do you wish you'd waited a few months longer? Do you expect to ditch your phone in the fourth quarter? Why, or why not?

I'm happy with the incredible. It does virtually everything I need it to do at this point. It exceeds all expectations I had for it. I see the specs for the forth coming phones and see nothing that makes me want to switch. I'm not big on games or apps. I need it to talk, text, email and browse the internet and it does all extremely well. My next device tho will be a LTE Android.

It's never a better time to wait... There's always something better around the corner.

    Somewhat true.

Fact is, phones are always released at certain times of the year (i.e. iPhone in June).
Granted, things are always outdated days after you purchase them, but there are certainly better times to buy a phone and/or wait on buying one, much like purchasing a new car.

Right now, I'd wait. 2010 is being called THE year for smartphones and tablet PC's. Several release dates are right around the corner and the market will adjust accordingly.

I'd wait until late July or early August to make the plunge. After that, Christmas time would be the next-best time to buy.

    Good Luck.

This is true but on Verizon it is going to be more limited. The only things coming that I can think of are the Droid 2 and the Shadow.

In my experience, there's no use waiting for something to come out. You'd just be waiting forever because there's always something new around the corner. If you try to keep up with the newest phones then you'll just spend a lot of money.

Acted too soon. I've been waiting for 6 months. You are obviously new :p

Honestly, I'm fine with the phone.

I don't know about year of the smartphone. Maybe year of the smartphone subscriber. I think 2011 will be the year of the smartphone with Verizon's 4g network being widely available. That coupled with where Sprint already is and the promise of at least HSPA+ on AT&T, services like hd recording, streaming hd video, video conferencing, mobile hotspotting will push the hardware even further. Plus amoled with improved brightness and true resolution will probably put a dagger in LCD for high end devices. I say don't wait until July/Aug because otherwise you're gonna have some serious buyer's remorse in 6-9 months, all because you wanted something marginally better, if even that.

There is nothing I have read about that makes me feel the incredible will be outdated anytime soon. That includes the EVO. The next Iphone could be interesting. Maybe Winmo 7.

The problem is, this quote is ALWAYS true. So if you wait until July for the Shadow, there'll be rumors of the next big thing to come around Christmas. Then by Christmas, there'll be some big release for April.

I'm absolutely happy with my Incredible. No regrets.

I'm glad I bought the incredible. One of the nice things about android is soon we WILL be getting a more advanced phone...when we get Froyo, either via root/rom or OTA update.

Unless you buy a new device every time a new device comes out you will pretty much be behind the times after about 4-6 months.

Like others have mentioned, waiting for whats next could go on forever. I held out on getting the Inc for over six months and could not see myself continuing to wait today for any of the recent phones to have been released. In spite of the mentioned phones differences (and similarities), I feel that the technology has plateaued for the mean time and I'm glad I didn't wait any longer.

Even though I got an Incredible, I'm eligible for an upgrade in October, but I'll be holding out. The next new phone I get will be on Verizon's 4G network. Until then, you're just needlessly waiting for the next shiny toy. The Inc is an awesome phone, and unless the Shadow has some specific deal breaking feature not found on the Inc, I don't see a reason to wait.

I think you have to buy the phone you need when you need it and not worry about what's around the corner as your new phone will continue to fulfill those needs long after it has been superseded by newer tech.

At the end of the day, it's just a tool. Personally, I have a 20 year old hammer on my workbench - sure, there's much better hammers out there, but the one I have does exactly what I need it to do.

I don't think the Shadow or the Droid 2 will be any better than the Inc. They all have their high points and low points but they all run Android and do pretty much the exact same thing. I highly doubt you will see a significant difference if you switched phones.. Plus the Inc has amoled and I don't think I can make the trade.

If you really have remorse, just sell it on ebay and purchase a new phone.. You might be out 100 bux or so but if it satisfies your tech urge than do it.

Agreed. Incredible is already outdated, since there are new phones on the horizon.

There's a guy in my office already talking smack about the EVO and he doesn't even have the phone in his hand yet. I love my incredible.

Agreed. The spec I read of the Shadow CPU put it at 720mhz, IIRC. And I don't see the Droid 2 making a leap much beyond that since it'd be coming from Motorola as well. You have to look at the product marketing schema. Droid 2 will probably be the "Flagship" model and a tad faster than the Shadow.

I'm lucky. My wife is due for an upgrade, I'm getting the Incredible for myself under her upgrade, and she is getting my Droid. I'm a heavy user, and have noticed a serious slowdown now that I have it built out to my liking. I'm also down to 27mb of free space. Froyo should help with a lot of that (speed and apps 2 sd install), hopefully it comes out before I format the device and hand it over to her.

That puts me eligible for an upgrade in December again, when she'll get the Incredible. VZW says that they hope to have LTE phones out by the end of this year, and a number released next year. A lot of that for me will hinge on the new pricing format though of the tiered data plans. They say that it may end up being cheaper because it is a 1/3'rd less expensive to send data on the 4G network.

So... on the VZW network (Evo is sweet on Sprint, but the network sucks around here), I don't see anything on the horizon for 4-5 months that is as big of a leap forward as the Incredible.
