I just got my girlfriend an HTC Droid Eris on Monday and so far she's really liking it. Hasn't downloaded anything yet other then Advanced Task Killer (free) but still, she's liking it.

Well today she's been sending a few text messages earlier this morning and everything was fine, but then last this afternoon she's tried to send text messages and it acts as if it's going but when she tries to close the application it pops up a message stating: "SORRY! The application Messages has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." then she has an option to "Force Close" to get rid of the box. Whatever texts she send appears to be undelivered. It's done it a few times already.

Any suggestions on what could be causing it? I'm going to have her power cycle the phone but didn't know if there was anything else?

If the problem persists after a reboot, make sure that she doesn't have ATK AUTOMATICALLY killing ANYTHING. Many times we've seen problems where a task killer was killing something that the phone needs to work. Task killers are OK, but they need to be used carefully. Once she's made sure that all automatic kills of the task killer have been disabled she should reboot the phone again (in case ATK has already killed something it shouldn't). After that have her not use ATK and see if her messages will send correctly.

Ok I certainly take a look at that when we get home from work. Thanks for the input.

Yea im willing to bet its the task killer, If you ask me task killers do more harm than good and i would uninstall it from her phone. I get MUCH better performance after i uninstalled mine a couple months back and im not going to look back.

You may also want to have her do a network update. Dial *228 and option 2.

When text stop sending it can often just be glitch with the network or even ppor signal in the area.

I learned about task killers the hard way.

While looking around here today I just found the thread (debate?) about using a task killer or not. While not wanting to turn this thread into that, I'll leave it as this - the VZW rep highly recommended we download it when she got the phone on Monday. I guess we'll see what happens, if she continues to have issue I'll remove it. Just want to try to make her battery last as long as possible.

I didn't even think about that, but will do that as well. Thanks!

We're paying for the unlimited talk and text plan, I can't see paying Chomp more for texting when we're already paying VZW.

It might even be safe to call that an argument. :)

There's is an assumption in there that the VZW rep knows what they are talking about. Sometimes that's true, sometimes it's not. I suspect it depends on the rep and the phone in question. It's not reasonable to assume that all reps know everything about all phones - there are just too many details to keep up with.

I have Advanced Task Manager (note 'manager' not 'killer' - different apps) on my phone, but I VERY rarely use it. I've found that clearing the cache and getting rid of programs I don't ever use, and the occasional reboot all go a LONG way in keeping the phone running well. I go for weeks at a time without ever killing a program.
Personally I don't care for ATK, as it seems to have a tendency to be a bit aggressive (or let the user be aggressive) in what is automatically killed - which often seems to manifest itself as a program that 'suddenly stops working'.

    (confused look) huh?
There isn't an extra fee for using Chomp. I use it, it's just another way to send a message. I believe there is an OPTION to buy Chomp time, but it's not required.

why would you have to pay for texting with chomp? its a free app, with ads. you want the ads to go away, pay $3 one time and youre set.

I understand his confusion. The way it reads is that rick had problems with text and switched to chomp and doesn't have the same problems. If you are not familiar with chomp then the assumption can be made that it is a company for text and not an app. ;)

As were not turning this thread into a debate i just wanted to tell you one thing. By not using a task killer it will save on battery life. Reason is, when you kill a background app that android uses, Its just going to reopen causing the phone to use me battery and memory.

Anyways programs like chomp and handcent and just programs like the native messaging app but they alow way more customization.

If I may make a suggestion. Let her try the phone without the task killer first and then, if she has a problem try putting it back on. The reasons I suggest this for any new user is that you have no idea if the phone or the task killer are causing problems when they occur. You also don't know if you really need one or not until you try the phone without it first.

    As I said, just a suggestion. :D

Chomp is an app that replaces the original SMS app on the phone. You can learn more about it at chompSMS. You can also take a look at Handcent sms HomePage --sms plus software for android for another alternative.

I would suggest getting it all running right before adding one these though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll certainly uninstall Advanced Task Killer when she gets home and we'll see how battery life is then, if it isn't so hot then I'll install ATM per your suggestion. I think I like that a little more than having something close stuff on it's own just because it thinks it should.

You confused... I'm confused now. haha

Correct me if I'm wrong but searching on google lead me to this page: chompSMS which they have a page to buy credits, starting price $6.00 for 50 SMS messages.

Maybe you're talking about another program? Or - more than likely I'm missing something?

Not sure what the credits could be for but Chomp is free for sending texts.

I just looked at their webpage and i believe the credits are for people who do not pay for text messaging through verizon and it will allow you to send messags over 3g. But in your case you wouldnt have to buy these credits. Try it out. Also look at handcent i like it much better than chomp
