So lately my Eris has been running extremely slow. About a week ago I got a notification for "Internal memory is getting low." So after reading through several threads of the same topic and doing all the suggested actions (delete old text messages, uninstall unnecessary apps, clearing the cache for applications) my internal phone storage now says that there is 45.61 MB free. Yet, I still have not noticed any improvement in performance.

For example, I use Handcent to text message, and lately I have been unable to open it without it force closing every time. I've tried removing it as the default and using the native SMS program, but when I go to compose a new message it won't bring in any of my contacts when I go to select one. It just stays at a loading screen and then force closes. Also, it shows the phone number of an incoming text instead of the contact name as its stored in my phone book, so I pretty much have to guess who's number it is. Any thoughts on why it would do that? The dialer is just as bad, and since I don't have any of my friend's phone numbers memorized the phone is pretty much useless now and unable to perform the most basic of functions, using it to make calls.

I'm at my wit's end pretty much, the only other thing that I can think of is performing a factory reset. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions or experience as to whether a full reset actually helps?

FYI, my phone is not rooted. I know, I know. Rooting will improve performance, but it seems like a hassle to me and I'd rather not have to deal with it (at least not yet).

Root, Root root, root root root root root. Then if you want everything to look just like it does now give XtrSense Rom a try or give one of the many Froyo rom's a spin. Saved me from throwing my phone into a brick wall. Now I have no reason to upgrade.

First off Rooting Will not improve the performance, It will just make it different. The only thing Rooting will achieve for you, if done properly is allow you to delete some of the useless crap that has no business being on a phone or was designed for the target audience of this phone - Tweens and Teens.

The performance exaggerations that are constantly bragged about on here and other forums are for all intents and purposes, unmeasurable and more often then not just a figment of some tween's over active imagination. Think of it as the "I have to have the latest, greatest, fastest, coolest gadget out there syndrom"

An Eris will never be fast. The hardware is what it is and their limitations are well documented. Think of how much computers improved from 2000 to 2010! The Eris is basically a first Generation circa 2000 device in a market that went from 2000 technology to 2010 technology in a little over a year. In time the technology will catch up with what we want or expect these phones to be able to do, but its just not there yet, and the Eris although a perfectly good phone, will never give you more then it was designed to when it was developed, over 2 years ago!

Yes, you can make Numerous TINY improvements that in the end may increase "SPEED" by a fraction of a second. but usually in doing so, you end up with other headaches. If you are of the camp that must have the highest "XYZ" score or some other "Non Real World Performance test". Then yes Root and tinker till your happy. You probably wont be, but go for it. Most people that brag about high scores or other performance test, dont even know what they mean, they just read a post where This weeks resident Genius mentioned them or bragged about his, so they must copy him.

With that said, I am Rooted and now have a phone that is no faster then stock, but one in which many of the annoying, To me, Kiddy apps are gone from it.

Your first inclination of doing a factory reset is the correct and best one for a user like you. If you choose Rooting, you are going to do many of them in the future, so you might as well try it Un-Rooted first.

This time however, when you have a Like new, Cleaned out phone - ONLY put on the FEW apps you absolutely must have. Then become judicial in your Daily clearing of caches, Closing of ALL the programs running in the background and most importantly relearn the Old Windows Trick, which is - When in Doubt - REBOOT.

A program like Quick System Info will kill all but the needed programs. But remember, Android is a half assed op system, that believes it can multi task and knows better then you, what programs you want running. So you will always and constantly be fighting that aspect of it.

Also remember all those widgets you have running, thought cool for a day or two are sucking down performance. One really doesn't need more then One home screen with either a couple of widgets or even better, shortcuts to the most used apps. But we are creatures of habit and just can't grasp that the Phone, is just not designed to do all the gimmicks and tricks we want it to. or at least Not All at the same Time!

    Good Luck

The most likely scenario is that you will see a dramatic improvement by performing a factory reset.

If your contacts are 100% Google contacts (no phone-only contacts), you can try this before you resort to a factory reset:

    Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications ->
and then do a "Clear data" on the "Contacts" and "Contacts Storage" apps, followed by an initiation of a sync operation

Settings -> Accounts & sync -> (long press on google account and then) -> Menu -> Sync now

If your contacts are not 100% "Google" contacts, then get them backed up before you perform the factory reset (or the above procedure). Noting that you are having trouble with your contacts, if you have troubles here, you might need to do this the old-fashioned way (pencil & paper). Only the non-Google contacts will need to be backed up, as the Google contacts will sync "from the cloud" after you perform the reset.

There are apps for backing up a variety of things (e.g. contacts, bookmarks, text messages, applications, etc); you can use them if you please, or just do things manually. It's a good idea to poke around through your various home screens (or take pictures of them with a digital camera) to remind you how to set them up after the reset.

Make a list of your installed apps; but don't re-install all of them right away - just install the "daily use" apps first, and be conservative about installing the rest of them (spend a couple of days in between installing things so you will be able to notice right away if a certain app caused trouble).

There were some minor bugs with the factory releases of 1.5 and 2.1 - but certainly not including what you are describing.

This is complete and utter Bull (explicative deleted). Rooting your phone and moving to a custom rom such as XTRSense, XTRROM, or one of the many others will make the Eris feel like a brand new phone. There is no lag and if you choose a stable rom there are few issues if any. You are correct that if you root and stick with the stock rom you'll see very little difference because the stock rom SUCKS and is poorly written. I flash my phone with different rom's quite often but that is just because there are so many choices out there. If you don't want to deal with that fine just flash xtrSense, forget your phone is rooted, and enjoy.

Surely, you jest. Because this is one of the funniest things I have ever read.

Granted, its not going to be Moto Droid fast (you set really high standards for 2 year old hardware if you think that), but you are surely joking if you say there is no real improvement over stock.

My sister noticed an improvement when I rooted her phone. Her battery lasted twice as long and she noticed that it performed better overall. I rooted my father's phone as well and he noticed a difference, and he's not big into downloading apps or texting at all, so its not some rogue app on stock.

So I'm thinking, if your not trolling, "ur doin it wrong". If you haven't flashed a new ROM, then you haven't really used a rooted phone, just a stock phone that has root privileges.

Sorry, but the only Troll here is you.
I am 100% serious. If you could read, you would see where I clearly stated that my phone is rooted.

I have tried every ROM out there and NONE of them give any noticeable performance increase, be it speed or battery life, over the stock ERIS. In fact most decreased the overall performance.

In a perfect world, if you Dot every "I" and Cross every "T" hold your breath and DON'T use your phone, then yes some ROMS will give what appears to be a miniscule but unmeasurable increase in Battery life or speed. but NEVER both!

Perhaps you can come up with a Real World Test, that has verifiable, Documented proof, that can be Duplicated on any ERIS, and Prove what you claim?

Nobody, on any forum, has yet to be able to prove any of their ridiculous "Improved" usage claims. But perhaps, you are the exception to the rule and will be able to provide Everyone with the undispitable Proof all have been waiting for

It's one thing to believe in something, but the proof is in the pudding. Until you or anyone else can absolutely prove an increase in speed or battery performance on the Droid ERIS by Rooting or any other means. You would do well to keep your childish Fan-boy opinions to yourself. Saying crap like I think its faster or it feels faster, or my brothers sisters friend thinks its better, especially after doing a wipe and reflash is as senseless as your reply was.

Saddly, most people on forums and Especially Fan-Boys like you believe what ever anyone tells them, If this weeks Genius claims he did X,Y and Z to his phone and now its faster, 99% of you will just believe it. Or worse, you will duplicate it and even seeing NO Actual Provable increase, You will just default to the status quo and propagate the lie.

It's known as "The Liberty Valance Effect - If the Legend becomes fact, print the Legend!"

Every test I have Done on my rooted ERIS has yet to beat or even match the HTC rated life of 214 talk minutes.

I don't care what Rom you use, what you think you know or What Fan-Boy club you belong to. No matter what you do to an ERIS you will never get much better then the Stock 214 mins of actual talk time. In fact in almost every scenario, you will never even be able to match that almost unachievable benchmark claimed by HTC

In real world use, giving actual Use stats, Not the typical Fan-boy misleading catch phrases like "Avg use" or a "few texts". Your ERIS, no matter what you do to it will ALWAYS be 3 to 3.5 hour of ACTUAL use time phone and in most case Less then that!

Saturday it was so bad I could even swipe the phone to answer a call. So Sunday I call Verizon, I explain my problem. Tell them I am tired of replacing this phone with another (this is my 4th hone), and I am very frustrated. CSR offers me an LG Ally, probably not my first choice, but I say I will take it, anything would be better... She then says there are none available, asks me if a Droid 2 will be ok? I got the shipping notice a few hours later, now I am patiently awaiting my Droid 2.

Today, I had the same experience with another phone call... Can't wait until my new phone arrives...

I really like the form factor/battery life, however I hate this constant lag that I get with it. I have a habit of a shutdown/battery pull about every other day, just to make sure everything is clear.

How many talk minutes did you get on stock 2.1 (or 1.5) Eris? I'd be interested to see numbers for all of the ROMs that you tested, along with testing procedures and conditions. (Did you stay in a single location, to make sure that signal strength was consistent across tests? Did you test three times and get consistent results for each test?)

Frankly, I don't give a crap about manufacturer reported talk time or standby time, because they are all reported under perfect conditions, and conditions that do not match the way that I use my phone. I don't come close to 214 minutes talk time in a month anyway.

You are quite wrong in all of your screeds about the Eris, with the possible exception of battery life. However, I get better battery life the way that I use my phone with the rooted Froyo ROMs (50% more) than I did under stock 2.1 or rooted 2.1 ROMs (about 25% more than stock) when I use the phone the same way. It's clear that my phone is faster when it is overclocked, but, honestly, I don't feel like taking whatever time it will take to prove a point to you.

Prove to me that stock 2.1 ROM is as fast as root. You haven't proved that yet, either; your posts are just as anecdotal. I'll repeat your words:

I think that anybody who roots should think hard about making that choice; for one think, it does, in fact, void your warranty (though unrooting to a point where evidence of root is becoming less difficult.) However, anybody who hasn't rooted who reads this guy's opinion of rooting, do know that there are dozens and dozens of us who have who clearly rooted correctly and show definitive and noticeable improvement in performance and, in most cases, improvement in battery life.

Alright. Whatever you want to believe. You got me. I'm a fanboy because I believe I should have administrative rights to my operating system and internal processes.

Not going to bother typing out a huge rebuttal, because it isn't worth my time. Besides, most other members here will do enough of that as it is.

I'm not really sure how to take this thread. I mean, I have a guy telling me that I'm not actually seeing what I'm seeing with my phone. Is my phone lying to me? Is it having an affair? Do I need those meddling kids to solve this mystery? Will our hero in danger survive the arch enemies’ evil trap? Tune in next week to find out.

Your right I don't know what I was thinking about rooting fixing my phone's lag and dramatically improving performance. Thats just stupid. Just because when running stock it took a full minute from selecting a phone number to my phone actually dialing the phone doesn't mean anything. Or the fact that using ANY custom rom my phone runs everything crisp and clean with 0 zero lag without even needing to overclock. Those dam worthless rom's!!! I see the light now. I can't believe I wasted all this time customizing my phone to maximize performance and look exactly the way I want...oh the humanity...

all I know is I was going to upgrade my phone to the DX as I was sick of the lag of my eris as well as I was almost out of internal storage with the apps I had loaded. I was afraid to root because I was afraid I would screw it up but found the easy root thread and decided what the heck and did it...easy, then added the xtrsense.....WOW....like a brand new phone, no lag what so ever especially on calling which I had before, faster browsing the web, loading apps, especially navigator. Plus with the cache 2 cache have added tons of internal memory and do not even need the apps2storage.....I am now totally happy with the eris and have no need for an upgrade. I actually played with my brother's DX for a couple of days and while nice, really didn't like the size or screen resolution compared to my eris....to say my phone is not now a totally different phone is utter nonsense....I am amazed every day at the difference ...the wireless tethering is awesome as I now use it a lot with my laptop when up at my cabin because there is no broadband up there but do have a new VZ tower there....huge thanks to the developers for the xtrsense as it is what the eris should have been from the start :)

regards battery life, no question it is better because I don't have all the apps running in the background I had before because I deleted some of the bloatware I had before as it always seemed like that stuff reloaded as I tried task killers, etc and they really never seemed that great, now no need for the TK's as I only have running what I want....regards to battery running apps probably little difference there as I use a lot of my apps especially for monitoring the stock market, biz emails, messages, internet, phone calls, but I am either usually at home, in the car or at my office so battery life has been no big deal for me as I am always close to a charger....again love my improved new eris

Wow so many people to respond to - Rather then taking the time to pick out each ridiculous comment from the usual suspects, I will sum it up for all or anyone of you.

    PROVE IT !

Take a few hours and Prove all your
"Wow my Battery life has doubled"
    "I have No Lag"
"Everything is Twice as Fast" claims.
Anyone can make claims like those, how many of you can Prove them?

My phone is rooted, I have tried nearly every ROM out there at least once and not one of them is without their problems or has shown any noticeable improvement in either speed, lag or battery life over a properly set up stock phone.

Tell us exactly what ROM you are using, its settings, what applications you have installed. Then Fully Charge your phone, Reboot it and let it run until it shuts off. Real difficult!

During this time keep track of Everything. Telling people "I made a Few" phone calls and "Avg" usage is useless. To prove your claim we need to see EXACT usage time, Exact amount of calls, texts, emails etc. In short do what NONE of you have ever done and Monitor everything. It wont take long, none of you will get more then 3 hours +/- of Actual use time.
If you can't or wont, you are all playing with yourselves.

I would love to get 50% better battery Life or have no Lag and a faster phone. But after trying every Tip, Patch, Gimmick, trick, New method, Update and Improved "Fixed" ROM I have yet to see it. All I see is Fan-boys making claims that NOBODY can PROVE or Duplicate

Not to single anybody out, but to the genius that told me to prove factory specs? Are you serious? Whats to prove, The burden of proof is on all you "Root solved all my problems" people.

I have stated several times I don't believe the factory specs and cant Duplicate them. I also stated many times that I know how they were obtained. If they ever really were! Which is under lab conditions nobody could hope to duplicate. But that just makes it easier for all you people who make ridiculous claims like "double" the battery life because I rooted! you have a starting point to work from.

I know know how my phone performed prior to rooting. And I know I was never able to get anything near what HTC Claimed. I also know, I don't get it after Rooting either, no matter what ROM I use.

Just for the record The best actual use time I was able to acheive was one single 2 hours 54 mins phone call which was made laying out on my deck, with 4 bars and a fully charged battery.

I offered my opinion, which is a different opinion then the STD, played out answer to every problem on the ERIS since day one = Wait for Root or Get Root! Whats the problem?
He knows what hes has now, hes knows what he can do to try and improve it, And with your option of "ROOT will Fix Everthing and Give you" Way faster / better performance" he now has more then One option to choose from.

If any of you can offer proof that your answer - "Rooting" will improve everything. Then it's obvious what he should do, and I will be the first one to tell him. But until any of you can prove it. I still think a factory reset, more attention to whats running and Tweaking his setup is a better PROVEN option.

In doing so, the best he can hope for is HTC claimed stats and barley any lag when using one program to mild lag when the phone is taxed beyond its known limits.

Battery life is the Only thing that matters to me, so the HTC stats are as good as any guide line for any of you to try to meet or beat.
Androids Major design flaw of Constantly starting numerous apps whether you use them or not and Not allowing you to easily and temporarily kill them (2.2). Negates any performance gains one could ever achieve on this phone regardless of ROM used or ROOTER or Not.

Until Google admits defeat on this Silly implementation our phones will never run as quick as they could compared to a stripped OP system , Running just what you are using - Which means LAG will always be there.

If the Eris has such a horrible battery life like you state it does, then why did you make this comment?

62% after 84 hours of avg to slightly less than avg use seems pretty good to me.

The burden of proof is just as much yours as it is anyone saying that rooting will solve his issue. So, lets see all your data that confirms rooting has no effect on your phone what-so-ever. Don't worry, we'll still be here when you get back.

Obviously you don't understand Sarcasm or the blatant placement of parentheses around certain words!

The point I was making in that and every other battery related post I made, was what a Joke they are!
With out accurate explanations of what words like "Light usage, Checked some emails, Surfed a little on the web" etc. Mean, Whats the point in making them?

Sadly, As you just proved, People on Net / Fan-boy type forums will believe anything they read. Everything you read was 100% Truthful and Accurate. But, it was purposely vague and misleading. And was done so to make my point, about Not Giving accurate info. A few got it immediately. Most, like you did not.

After I posted that I got about 2 or 3 P.M.'s asking me to define "Avg." to Slightly less then "Avg."
Which is the whole Point of the posts in this thread!

    BTW
Try this yourself - get rid of all widgets, force close all the crap that google thinks u need, kill WiFi, 3G background data etc.. Charge your phone use it a maybe 5 to 10 mins per day making sure you remember to re-disable everything after each use and your ERIS will also last 8 - 10 days, maybe more. It does have a 300+ hour STBY time

This will also answer your request for proof, which you seem to lazy or unable to provide backing up the " rooting fixes Everything" claims you made.

In case you still don't get it, I have nothing to prove, I am using the OEM stated actual usage capacities as my benchmark, when and if you or anyone can meet or beat them - Let us now and then.......................................PROVE it!

P.S.Don't worry, I will still be here when and if you ever get back, But if I were you I'd be pretty embarrassed about right now. So I will understand if you, Hopefully - Don't come back!

    See the Point?

I’m still waiting to see your proof. Don't worry, I won’t go anywhere. The fact is, you cannot tell me what my phone is or is not doing. You don't know. I know how it was before I rooted it. I know how I had silent call issues every other call. I know how it lagged like crazy just trying to dial a number or type a text. I know how bloated it was with HTC Sense. I know what it's like with my phone rooted also. I know I haven't had a single silent call bug since that point. I know all my phones actions are quick with no lag.

You're argument the whole time has been that rooting is a waste of time yet you offer no proof to support these claims. Instead, you do what everyone else who has no argument does...You pull the burden of proof card that way you can justify your lack of an argument. Sorry, but I'm not buying it. There are a countless number of people on here, myself included, who know what the outcome of rooting our Eris will be. You say you're rooted and have tried every latest and greatest rom out there and see no difference between those and stock. Well, sir, you are doing something wrong. It's as simple as that.

Now I shall patiently wait for your proof that rooting isn't all it's cracked up to be since you are the one who has to convince me.

Perhaps you should check up on your reading comprehension while you're at it. At no time did I say rooting will fix everything. Every rom has its ups and downs. 90% of the time, those ups and downs have a fix a day or so after the rom is released.

Wrong again Einstein. I'm "sure" you had "All" the same make believe ERIS problems on your phone, that every other Teen /Tween suddenly gets when ever the recent "Forum Genius" invents them. And i'm also sure yours like 95 % of the rest of them were also "unable to be Dupicated" by a factory tech.

But thats what happens in Consumer Electronics, when people get jealous, want the latest greatest gadget, have buyers remorse or any other Consumer "in their mind Only" problem is propagated on forums

If HTC or any other Consumer Electronics firm made as many defective products as people on Forums Suffering from the above ailments, claimed they did, they would be out of business.

I'll say this one final time - My phone is Rooted, there is no difference in speed or Battery life on Any ROM as compared to before it was Rooted. My phone had none of the other Teen Boy, mysterious, Only happens on people who want upgrades, Problems. My reason to root was to get rid of all the children crap from my phone. And try and keep stuff from running in the background which ROOTING won't do.

If you can prove your phone is better, thats great, if you cant don't worry, Nobody expected you to.

Two Identical phones with identical hardware and software Wont have drastically different performance specs. Some body here cant judge speed, tell time or wants to believe something so bad, they are imagining things.

    good luck

P.S. it's not the "burden of Proof Card" as you so eloquently alluded to in your lame attempt at reverse Psychology. its the "You are F.O.S. card"

Sorry you are so unhappy with the Eris, maybe the Incredible is a better phone for you although I hear the battery is about the same or the new Samsung which I considered till recently rooting.....regards to proving anything, I only have to proof it to myself as the difference in stock and rooting to xtrsense 4.5 is night and day as the phone call lag is totally gone which was there before, speed has increased, not to mention the additional benefits of more internal memory, wireless tethering, flash that actually works and eliminating the bloatware. Not sure why you are so compulsive about the battery as mine works just fine and not an issue for me.

Good luck with your next phone but I now love my new tweeked eris :)

lol I did that with my last Eris I sent back for warrenty replacement. Before I went into the store to complain that my hardware on the phone is being wonky I put that on there because it looks just like stock. I changed the boot screen to stock too. The rep did a factory reset and I was like oh snap.....He rebooted it and said, "Thats wierd...its a little flashing android man thing. Oh well they are all different I guess...your new phone is in the mail..."

I just recently rooted my Eris a few days ago. I installed nonsensikal froyo. I can most definitely notice an increase in app load time and email load time. Over all responce is better too. The Battery life might be a bit better, but it's not worse for sure.

    my two cents
