personally, i would rather have fond memories of how good the display looked when i first bought it, rather then have it look and feel like crap from day one with a s.p. . i just hate it when i get a new phone and i peel that distorted bubbly s.p. off and see this beautiful screen on the phone im tossing.

People rag on them, but I have an Invisishield and love it. (avoid the smudge free one) I have been using plain glass on my Evo for the past few weeks, the shield on the 3vo - it's not bubbly, rough or distorted.

Yes that definitely looks like glass breaking. Plastic would not break like that.

But you can feel a difference, right?

I used to swear by invisishields, too. There's one still on my iPod. Used to have one on the DX. I got a screen protector from the VZW store. They were horrible. They didn't cover the bezel at all. They were cloudy and they felt like crap. Then I went to the nearest best buy, got one of those shields, and put it on the phone. It was such a drastic improvement that I thought that it was perfect.

Then I got the 3vo. I was waiting for a package that day, so I went to the Sprint store, got my phone, and went straight home without a screen protector. I marveled at how silky smooth the glass felt. I thought it was a drastic improvement over my DX in that regard. Then I got an invisishield. In comparison, it felt sticky/tough to move my finger over the screen. I think that thing was on for a few days before I peeled it off. I peeled the one off my DX, too, to see if it was the same way. Sure enough, silky smooth without the protector.

Since then, I've been looking for a good screen protector that can replicate that smoothness without compromising the clarity. I tried PhantomSkinz. It was better than invisishield, IMO. But it wasn't that much better. Definitely a bit cheaper. Then I got one of these Steinhiel protectors. I probably butchered the spelling. But I got an ultraclear and it feels almost exactly like the bare glass. I compared by gliding my finger over the 3vo with the Steinhiel then the bare DX. Barely a difference.

Are invisishields bad protectors? No. Their biggest advantage is that you can get one now and they fare better than the really cheap ones. But I would never get another one. After feeling how smooth the screens can be without a protector, any protector that doesn't feel close to that is no good. For NextPhone, I'll get a cheap one that is crappy, or go bare, until a Steinhiel is made and delivered.

My $.02. I used a screen protector on my EVO 4G and was all for using one on the 3VO. The sprint tech reps at the store actually talked me OUT of it. I was ready to spend the cash and they talked me OUT of it, lol. Needless to say for the month I've had the phone I've got zero scratches on the screen.

True. The screens are fairly resilient. They won't easily scratch with normal use (unlike the old resistive screens), however coins, keys in a confined space like a pocket or a purse will eventually make their mark.

Whats wrong with the smudge free ones? My friend tried to get one for his Evo 4G but they were out. Ended up with a regular one. If he ever replaces he might try to get a smudge free one.

We have a thread on it, but the smudge-free ones have that orange peel surface and visually distort the qHD display. I've read of a lot of customer remorse with the smudge-free.

  11. I've watched my son who works for Sprint, hold his phone in one hand and a car key between his fingers and jab at the screen multiple times with 0 scratches.

Has he tried sand paper? Or even just sprinkling some sand/grit on the screen and rubbing lightly?

Just one more reason to buy a Defender for it. Buy once, cry once.

I had the original EVO since launch day and after 3 or 4 days, it did not have a protector and I had NO scratches on it at all!! Whether it is the same screen or not, I do not know.

I don't like how the material of this phone is really cheap, this phone not only gets scratches so easily on the screen, but also the metal around it gets chips really easy. After my phone got a few hair scratches on the screen, I Finally ended getting a screen protector for it and now you can't even see the scratches any more. I also had to get a case for it because it got as few nicks on the sides. Good thing i found as pretty cool case that wasn't expensive.

Yeah. So, in the end, the damage is not extensive and you got a cool 3D video.

I figure if damage is not really noticeable on a daily basis, then it is probably not that bad. If I could see the damage easily, then it would bother me. :)
  17. Not that I know of... What were your results when you tried it?

Sand will definitely scratch the screen.

There are way too many environmental factors that will make a difference between whether one person gets scratches and why another person doesn't. Sometimes it just happens. I just noticed a two very small scratches on my screen just yesterday versus having my original evo 4g for a year without a single blemish. I have been in St.Thomas, Virgin Islands for the last few weeks and I go jogging on the beach every single day so I kind of expected it to happen eventually, that sand/silica will do you in for sure.

I don't see why people are so against spending $3-10 to protect the screen of a $199-699 device. Makes no sense. Plus the matte/smudge proof ones might be rough looking but it's better than wiping 10000 fingerprints off of it a day.

    Personal preference I guess.

    it a matter of choice...

i have used the SP.. screen protectors.. before on my other phones.. because the screen where plastic. since my HTC Diamond and glass screens; i tried with and without.

at first, like most, i get a SP for my shiny new toy...and feels fine.
then after a while the sp needs to be replaced... i take it off.. and feel the great smooth clear screen.

i put on the new sp.. and it just does not feel the same. tried to live with the sp .. find better sp.. try a bunch... but none that can match the naked glass.

so... i got rid of the sp..
    htc diamond.. no issues
    htc hero .. no issues
    htc evo.. no issues

    love it naked!

What happened to me is worse. I tried putting a screen protector but messed it up. I removed with an intent to put another one soon. Two days later I was at work wiping my screen clean when I noticed a 1mm scratch. (I can feel it with my finger nail) The phone has been in my pocket with the screen facing me since day one. I stopped putting change in that pocket, even relocated my keys to a different pocket. It only took less than a month even when I babied this phone.

I've always used a xoskins screen protector Never had anything penetrate it and it has keep down finger prints. They come with a lifetime warranty, so you can't go wrong

How durable is the glass on the Evo3d? I have had a screen protector on mine since day 1 but recently took it off and was surprised at how much better the screen looked with it off. I'd like the screen to stay looking good but I love the look without the screen protector. How hard is it to scratch the glass? If you recommend using a protector which one do you recommend that cuts down on glare, and still lets me enjoy the crispness of the screen as if the protector isn't there?
