So I took my case off my EVO and really like it much better.

So here's my question, will a case really stop my EVO from shattering if I drop it on the pavement while taking it out of my pocket?
    If not then what

I'm guessing it'd help if you dropped it from a smaller height (table to floor maybe?) but I don't know about pocket to concrete.

I got my case mostly to have a better grip on it and to get the camera off the desk. And some peace of mind too.

I have to get a case. I bought a really attractive case from the Sprint store but putting it on lifted my invisible shield. If you spend a few minutes CAREFULLY putting it on, then you can do it without lifting the shield but on this phone I want to be able to quickly swap batteries if necessary. Now the invisible shield is visibly lifted along the top and bottom and its uuuuuuuuuuuugly. I need a new case to cover that up.

I don't use a case. I have never had a case on any phone. I really don't understand why people feel they need a screen protector on a phone like this. The glass is extremely durable. You lose the smoothness and anti-fingerprint properties when you apply a screen protector. The camera lens is the only part of this phone that worries me.

Engadget - HTC EVO 4G subjected to harrowing barrage of scratch tests, holds its own

I used invisible shield on my iPod Touch, but only on the back. The aluminum scratched very easily. The glass screen is still like new. I have dropped that on concrete more than once.

Indeed, since I got the Hero, I said buh bye to screen protectors. It's a film of plastic that you stick on the face of your screen with WATER. That can really **** the phone up, why bother when you never had any worries from the start? Knowledge is power people, I kind of assume that most people would really read into something before going out, dropping eithe $200, or $483.74 (price I paid) on something like this. The framerate being locked at 30fps was something nobody ever caught before I bought this, but I guarantee you that if I had known about this before, I wouldn't have gotten the phone.

Off topic, but you can return it can't you? I mean it hasn't been out 30 days. And isn't the frame rate an artificial lock? Meaning they can remove it with a patch.

imo i like the case at all times because even the tiniest drop can muck up the phone pretty good. plus the case lifts the screen off of a surface as well as the camera. essential imo.

    but naked is sexy..

It would help but there is still a possibility the screen will shatter just makes the odd less. I actually dropped my phone last night from 3 feet onto a hardwood table with the body glove case on the phone and the phone didn't have one mark or scratch on it although the case did fly off witch is common with all hard cases but ill have to say it did its job for the most part.

I got the best buy insurance thing, they replace it for any reason other than theft. its only ten bux a month you could get three months of that for the price of a good phone case or even a screen protector.

Dropping without a case will almost guarantee you major damage!

I've kept mine naked so far, but I'm looking at a few cases. I'll have to do a trial run with a case to see how comfy I am with it.

10 bucks a month? That's a ripoff, Sprint's insurance is 7 bucks a month, AND it covers theft.

Yeah but, Sprint requires a $100 deductible to replace the phone. Does BB's plan require a deductible?

No Deductible. Unlimited claims and loaner phones when they send it out. I only got the insurance at BB untill i get a feel for the phone and i'll cancel it when im comfortable handling the phone. its an expensive peice of equiptment

I have the insurance so I'm willing to bet $100 that I can take care of the phone. Sure after a few adult beverages on the weekends something could happen but I carry my phone in my pocket and hate any extra bulk.

No buff for me, and every phone I've had has been naked. I got one of those textured rubber Best Buy/Seidio rebrand cases and it's not as ugly as I thought it'd be, plus it adds a bit of thickness (I feel the Evo is a tiny bit too thin). I trust the screen not to get messed up, but the backing seems like it could scuff without you knowing it, and I like to keep my phones in impeccable shape, front and back.

Plus, the money I spent on this phone...oy....gotta protect the investment.

My last several phones have been naked, no problems. However, this morning I noticed a small gouge in the screen - wah! Don't know how it happened, I have been carrying it primarily in my pocket, occasionally in the Seidio clip holster. It was definitely in my pocket that it happened. Not unusable by any stretch, I can see it only at an angle if the screen is off, but if I run my fingernail over it there is a gouge, not a piece of dirt. If it spreads, I will use my Sprint coverage.

I had the same HTC diamond for more than 1 and half years, dropped it numerous times on pavement and on tile floor and it never broke, no case, no screen protector, still works perfectly, my little bother is using it like an ipod touch right now. Very few scratches on the screen, not noticeable when on, and the back still looks great, the only thing that happened was that i lost the stylus once when it dropped and did not notice until i got home, so it has a big hole on one side, lol. Htc seems seems to build their stuff well, and i like the weight of the evo, should give it some weight to absorb impacts. I do have a anti glare screen protector from the sprint store but not liking it, makes the screen look odd. Will give it a few more days to see if it improves.

I just keep the sprint insurance until i can upgrade again, 1 year, since the deductible is not that much less of what you would pay for a new phone, so if it breaks after a year you might as well get a new phone that will be more advanced by then for just a $100 more.
