This is perhaps a quick look at what Otterbox has given us for our Evos. Ill include my thoughts and compare this offering to the commuter case from the HTC Hero as far as build quality is concerned.

First impressions out of the box, the silicone portion of the case is a bit thin compared to the Hero version. The Hard plastic backing is a bit thinner as well, but feels a bit firmer than the more flexible hero version. The case by itself is very light weight and the thinness of both pieces do well to keep the added bulk on the phone to a minimum. Along the side of the case are thin grooves of no silicone so the hard plastic shell has a place to grab onto. It doesnt look like they touch the phone much if at all, so not much fear of the plastic rubbing against the phone.

putting the case on the phone is pretty simple, but a little bit more of a pain than it should be. Lining up the grooves , the volume rocker nub, and the bottom port cover can be annoying, but it should be easier in time. The same can be said for taking off the case, its not an simple pull off hard cover. ( ill explain more later )

When on the phone, the case is sleek and it certainly feels solid. it covers the phone very well and adds little bulk. I have larger hands so the phone size isnt an issue for me and the case doesnt add much bulk in a pocket either. The power and volume buttons work well and dont require much more force than without the case.

My main concerns come with the thickness of the silicone layer. It feels a little thin and it can be a little bit easier to move around. unless you try, the corners or top of the silicone portion when on the phone wont move much, but there is some give. The biggest concern though, is the bottom port cover. Redesigned from the Hero, it no longer has nubs that fit directly into the ports, but have a small ledge that fits into the hard case. This redesign is more than welcome. I feel it will stay in place most, if not, all the time. The problem i have is the silicone portion just below the cover looks a little flimsy and i fear that constant removal of the hard cover portion may eventually damage this area, but even with a 1 year warranty from the sprint store, i dont think it would ever be an issue.

Sorry for being long winded, but i am a stickler for my technology and i know i would want this kind of detail from someone else doing a review.
Overall, im very happy with my purchase. I was fortunate to get a pretty good discount from the sprint employee at the store and it was an instant buy for me. Despite my small concerns, I like the feel , the lack of bulk the case adds, and how solid it is on the phone. Im confident this can withstand accidental drops. It does come with a screen protector which is more than suitable, but I felt the most important part to review would be the case itself. Pictures to follow.

Awesome. Never bought such an expensive case before but I've never had such an expensive phone either. This review is helpful. Glad I bought one.

Hows the screen protector that came with it. I never had to put one of those on either.

The screen protector isnt bad at all. Its self adhering and being i had the same for my hero which i got over a year ago, its definitely durable. never had any peeling issues or movement.

the case comes with a small microfiber cloth and a plastic card-type applicator which helps you smooth out the air bubbles when applying the protector. It comes with detailed instructions so placement isnt too difficult. im a bit of a perfectionist though, so i take my time and try to make sure its on there as perfect as i can get it. patience is truly a virtue here lol.

I really loved my case for the hero and i have no doubt ill get the same use out of this one for my evo. Its a little on the expensive side, but i feel much more comfortable with it on than a cheaper, thinner ebay model. the combination of a soft and a hard layer really make a difference. Enjoy!

Yes, thanks for the review. I just received mine this morning and put it on as I was reading this review. I didn't use the screen protector, I have a Zagg on which I like a lot. I thought it went on pretty easily. I put the rubber part on first, then slipped the phone/rubber piece combo into the harder piece, starting with the bottom of the phone. I had to nudge it this way and that way once or twice but then everything was lined up. I agree that the bottom port cover was kind of flimsy. I thought it should be more like the cover for the headphone jack. Seems like a very nice case, I hope it's as good as everyone raves about, sure looks nice.

I didn't want to wait any longer so I went to the sprint store and picked one up. The sides are excellent, but I agree about the bottom port cover, and the small rubber strip that runs along the bottom front of the phone is pretty thin.

Also I wish they would have done the top like the defender and impact series are supposed to be, bringing the rubber down to the screen. Or they could have put more plastic up there. I can lift it away easily with my finger and I imagine every time I slip it out of my pocket ( usually put it in my front pocket, top down and screen to my leg), it lifts in that spot, and lets some lint go in between the case and the phone.

Oh well All in all I'll keep it...

So, after a few hours of having the phone in and out of my pocket I can say that I like the slimness of the case but the rubber pieces do attract a little bit of lint. Not that big of a deal but noticeable.

I just picked up one of these as well from my local sprint store and it appears to be a great case. I have the body glove as well as the Pt case (seidio) and holster I picked up from best buy on launch day. I guess I can add something to the forum by letting anyone that has a seidio case and holster that the holster will work with the Otterbox case perfectly. It was the determining factor for me when I saw the case at my local Sprint store. I dont like to put anything in my pocket except a wallet and every phone I have owned since the late 90's have had a clip case or a holster.

I think the commuter is the perfect case for those of us who already paid for that near bullet proof screen protector, a decent case and holster combo from seidio.
The defender has a built in screen protector which in our case isnt needed, it comes with a holster which in our case isnt needed. I personally like the look of the commuter in the holster better than the defender looks plus I have it now vs who knows when.

I wish I had another phone with a good camera to take a pic of it in the holster because it looks like it should have came that way. On a side note you can order the holster by itself from seidio as well just a little FYI.

For me this case is miss. The texture on the back cover makes it slippery for small hands and feels pretty rough. My pinkie is also always pulling the plug at bottom out. Its back to the Pt best buy case for me.

The case is an absolute thumbs up for me. I think the case will serve the phone well, though the silicone shell is a bit thinner than I have seen, the hard shell makes up for it. the texture on the case has a wierd feel and some may not like it. The raised integrated button protectors make it a snap to adjust the volume and access to the off button. I graduated from the body glove brand case. I will be sticking with this case...

I wish they didn't have that retractable cover at the bottom covering the usb/hdmi ports. I know this is to protect the ports, but I'm constantly plugging and unplugging my phone and this would seem to be a pain to deal with.

I currently have the Seidio Active and the bottom ports are not covered up, which is what I prefer. I was going to purchase this case as a replacement since the Seidio's back rubber is peeling off, but I'm not sure now.

    Anyone else feel the same?

I was thinking about picking this case up in a day or too from the sprint store, but my main concern is that the hard outer shell. Is the main outer shell have a rubberized feel to it or is it just hard and slick.

you could always carefully cut that part of and not have to deal with that port and would probably never notice it missing. just a thought

Just got 2 of them at the local Sprint store. They're running an accessories promotion where you get 25% off if you buy 2 or more accessories together. Definitely the best case I've ever owned for any gadget!

I really wish the bottom plug would fit more securely. I'm already looking for ways to mod it so it stays put better... :(

One update regarding the otterbox - the phone wobbles a little bit now when used with the kickstand. So far the only negative I have against it.

Anyone know if it adds more bulk to the phone than the Seidio Active case?

Less than the Seidio Active, in my opinion it feels better in the hand. I just wanted to test it out, but I plan on getting the Defender. If I keep it the only thing I have an issue with is the cover for the USB/HDMI. I would have to cut it off if I keep it as it flaps open way to easy in and out of my pocket.

In what way is the bottom plug unsecure? Could you post a photo? Mine fits perfectly snug like the picture posted above in post #2.
