I think emocticons can be disabled by default if this is more of a technical forum.

Wrap your code posts with [code][/code] to make it formatted a bit better (which also prevents parsing the emoticons). You can also use the [plain][/plain] tag to suppress the emoticons (and other formatting symbols) within non-code text.
