My Bad, you are correct. The lead in on MSN.com said Droid X and I didn't check. There you go! He should have bought a Droid X. Better phone, less explosions.

Prove what? They haven't proved that the cell phone blew up and/or caused this jackwagon's ear damage, thus it's bullshit.

I'm thinking BS myself. But I guess you never know. Look for Mythbusters to test this one out....

OK here is what I think happened. Since he is from Texs I'll use Texan / Southern terminology. He said something to his old lady (wife/girlfriend) and she took his phone and hit him "up side the head" (ear) cause in her mind he needed "killing".

he probably had some crap a$$ Chinese extended battery in it. the battery got to hot, expanded, put pressure on the screen, broke the glass, then cut the victim.

then he thought oh crap i never thought that would happen to me. and put his stock battery in so there was no proof of it. thus the reason the phone still works and battery is intact.

    just my theory.

I'm calling BS on this one. I agree with the assessment of the damage. I am an electronics engineer. If the battery was unharmed as stated in the article, then the most likely candidate for explosion would be a tantulum capacitor. They tend to do that when they are overvoltaged or reverse voltaged. I analyzed the PCB as seen on ifixit. The D2 only has what appears to be tantalum caps (hard to tell from pictures) on the main PCB. This PCB is located in the top of the phone on the keyboard half. Even if one of these VERY SMALL tantalum caps were to explode i doubt they would create enough force to cause this damage. Not to mention that where they are located they would have to have exploded through the metal that is on the back of the screen and part of the sliding mechanism. Then you have to understand that the failure mode for these and virtually all polarized caps is a short. This would create a short in the power system and not allow the device to function, yet the article states that the phone is still fully functional.

Most likely scenario - Hes trying to extort money from Moto/Verizon.

The guy just screams "I'm not too bright" as he talks, and hopefully once they prove against his hoax, they throw some countering legal action his way.

Calling BS on this one too. The blood marks on the phone indicate he was using his right ear but his left is the one bleeding.

Eeerrrr... do you happen to work at Scottland Yard by chance? Damn, you're good my man. You should move to Hawaii. Now that Magnum has retired they could use a good private dick around them islands. Ok, ok, I know it's not easy to sport a mustache like Tom Seleck can... but driving around in a topless Ferrari all day can't be a bad gig, now can it?

I just love how at the end of that clip they say the family is thinking about suing... imagine that. I think the loud 'pop' he heard was the sound of the gun going off during a drive-by, and the bullet grazed his ear and phone at the same time.
