Ok so I was rooted at one point but now i'm not because something went wrong and kicked me back to stock 2.1. I could still boot into recovery then but had no SU app in the tray and no root access. Finally today I attempted to reroot it, I used the same method before and it all went smoothly until the step where you go into the app tray and open the SU app, I didn't have it. After this, I decided to re-run a 2.1 Ruu and then root it again from there. After installing HTC Sync and everything I try to run the Ruu program and it says waiting for bootloader for about 2 minutes then fails. I get an error like: error 171 connection error, it simply tells me to check my usb connections which I know are good. Anyone have any ideas as to what the hell is wrong or where I should go from here?

Try downloading the RUU again from a different source. I don't recall what this error message means, but there are a few that all relate to a bad download.

Yeah that's what I heard also, trouble is, I tried 2 already both of which were posted by Regaw at the end of his rooting tutorial. If neither of those worked I can't see others working.

Yup, I can't help but think that its something that is stored in the internal memory yet persists even after a factory wipe. I can't root, I can't RUU and I can't even do the .6 update, fml...

Lol nope, I thought about copying everything to a computer from SD then completely erasing the SD then putting everything back on and going from there.

Do you have the latest version of HTC Sync? That's what gave me my error last time I used the RUU

I tried both the latest version from the HTC site and just copying over the older version from the SD card, same problem either way.

    DISABLE OTA UPDATES!!!!
To disable OTA updates that will patch this exploit, (after rooting and booted after creating a nandroid backup) run the following commands from Command Prompt.

    Code:

    cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

    Code:

    adb remount

    Code:

    adb shell

    Code:

    mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak

After doing this, the OTA updates WILL still download, BUT they will not pass signature checks to flash because of the code you just entered.

Think this may be whats causing the problems? I have tried to download the .6 update and the error I get when they fail to install is something like failed, no signature or something like that. Is there a way to undo this part maybe so I can go from there?

Also, should usb debugging be on or off when trying to run the RUU?

Okay so despite it showing the drivers are installed correctly, when I open sync it cant find the phone, Im assuming this is part of the problem, Im not even sure the drivers are installed correctly because it should work if they were? I am using a windows 7 pc by the way. I've searched about this and all i've come up with is people saying this is a problem with Windows 7 but I cant find any solution. Im assuming this is also why I cant root my phone, if anyone could point me in the right direction i'd be your best friend?

Try version 2.0.3.3 IIRC, that's the ONLY one I could get to work on my laptop with win7

Well it still won't root or RUU, I had usb debugging on and it was in charge only mode, is it supposed to be in charge only, disk drive, or what?
