I've owned a Fascinate for approximately a month now (just inside my Verizon exchange period). I'm having 3 problems with the Fascinate though (using with corporate Exchange).

    1. Can't query the global address list and copy contacts down.
    2. Calendar events created can't be opened by Blackberry users.
    3. Can't sort contacts by last name.

I arranged with my Verizon rep to get a Droid X demo. Oddly enough, the first two problems are fixed in the X. The problem is, I really like the Fascinate as a device better.

Why does the Droid fix the first two problems? Is it 2.2 that fixes them and I'm better off to wait? Is it something else that's inherent to the Droid?

You're highlighting a couple of the considerations that have some potential buyers of X and Fascinate in a bit of a quandry.

I admit to meandering back and forth in the store several times, playing with both and talking to one rep there who loved the X but had an Incredible just for the keyboard.

I agree with you on the appeal of the Fascinate, but wish I could sort things as I want them, plus I feel that the Droid X will remain ahead of the Samsung phones (heck, even HTC is bragging about sending out Gingerbread for many of its products soon: http://androidforums.com/android-news-talk/232653-gingerbread-headed-number-htc-devices.html).

I do not regret my decision, though. App developers address this stuff. ;)

The 3rd is also available with the X. I *think* the sorting became available with 2.2, so the Fascinate may not have the ability yet (someone feel free to correct me).

I googled it and found that it was available with 2.2 on the Droid, but not the 2 nor the X.

My biggest issues with the X are the following:

    1. Can't get rid of the jittery swipe screen lock and just use pattern lock.
    2. Home screen swiping isn't as fluid and smooth.
    3. I don't like the physical buttons as much. :(

Why can't Samsung just support their stuff better?

Yes, yes it does. If I want to pay an extra $20 on top of the phone price.

My issue with it is these features were present standard on my Motorola Q and 3 Blackberry Devices I had as far back as 4 years ago.

It's looking like paying for additional software is my only way out.

Seems like all the advanced features are awesome, but the ball was dropped on some basic ones.

I personally haven't had any problems getting my exchange mail/contacts/calendar to sync with the phone. Maybe I'm just lucky with my account?

It's not syncing. That works just fine. It has to do with how scheduling appointments works (Blackberry Devices don't recognize the .ics files) and pulling contacts from the GAL. My contacts in Outlook sync just fine.

That's probably the path I take, but I wish Touchdown was a better app. I wish there were an icon to go directly into mail, contacts, calendar, etc.

The X can sort contacts by first or last name (if you have an X, go to your contacts, hit the menu button, and choose display options).

    1. Multiple current ROMs have a more fluid swipe screen lock, or there's WidgetLocker and other alternatives. Or, you can use a pattern lock.
    2. Swiping has always been fluid with LauncherPro
    3. I actually like the physical buttons; some like them, others don't

I couldn't find the sorting when I did that, there is no display options. I found others with the problem when I googled it.

Oddly enough, you mentioned Launcher Pro. On the Fascinate, one of my favorite things was to keep hitting the home button and watching the home screens collect and scatter. It was so smooth and pretty. On the X, not as much.

Stinks to think you need to root to get smooth animations. :(

How do you enable pattern lock without the swipe across unlock. When I enabled pattern lock, it made me do both.

You can do this with Touchdown. Long press on your home screen, choose "Create Shortcut", choose "Touchdown (Android 2.0)". Touchdown then presents a screen of its different internal icons. You can choose e-mail, "new mail message", calendar, contacts, tasks, or notes. Once you choose, a shortcut to that specific area of Touchdown is created. It works well.
