Buddy of mine rooted his EVO 4G and added tethering app. He showed me how I could connect my Samsung Captivate to his EVO via Wifi and surf using his cell (3G) connection. To my knowledge, he was connected using only 3G (no 4G signal there). However, page loads were MUCH faster on my phone when tethered to his phone than when I use my own AT&T 3G connection.

    Why so much faster??

probably more has to do with the carrier....could be a few things but most likely it's the distance from the tower.

Are you trying to compare GSM 3G to CDMA 3G?
If so they are not comparable.

Also you need to find out exactly what your comparing to.
1xRTT, EVDOrO, EVDOrA, GSM, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSPA.
Each has its own set of protocols and different download speeds.
Also because each is a completely different carrier the individual tower loading will be different.
