Looks like you won't be stuck with just Dolphin as an alternative browser. Looks like Mozilla is bringing Fennec, their Firefox Mobile basically, to Android this February.

Of course, it's from Phandroid itself, so you may have already seen it. But for those that never frequent the front page, well, here it is:

    Good find.

I've been hoping for a Firefox browser for this device, just to try (don't like the Dolphin "gestures," etc).

Opera is the one I ended up using on my Samsung Instinct. Very fast and intuitive browser; I just didn't like having to go three more clicks to get into the keyboard from a text-input website, then three to get the input back to the site.

So Dolphin is really our only alternative? I enjoyed the Opera browser on my old Omnia. I wish would could get Google Chrome. That would only make sense!

I installed Opera the day I got my phone and it wouldn't let me log in to Facebook. Perhaps an update fixed that but i never went back to check.

Also, I haven't seen anyone on this forum mention it much. I just felt they had similar problems as well. There's a Mobile and a Mini. I'm not sure which one we have, but the other one is the better one and is only on Symbian right now, i believe, but we're going to get it soon too.

I'm still using stock browser. Moving from a blackberry, this browser is still miles ahead.

I've been using xScope for a few days and am starting to like it. I tried using dolphin for a while, but it just didn't "feel" right. It worked fine, I just didn't like it. Opera was great on the WinMo phones...I absolutely loved the way it worked. I don't care much for the Opera Mini. Again it just didn't "feel" right. I know, I know, that's subjective. I can't even quantify it other than to say it doesn't feel like I want it to.

I never really fell for Firefox. I mostly use Chrome on my full-size computers, and am thrilled to death with xScope on the Android platform.

Bringing this back, because as some of you may have seen on the front page, there is a pre-alpha version of Fennec available. However, it states that it is for the Motorola Droid and the Nexus 1. I downloaded the .apk and installed it, but it's not working on my phone. I can get the browser to pop up for a second or two and see "about:first run" in the address bar, but then it closes.

Has anyone else had a chance to give this a shot? Have you been able to get further into using it than I have?

I think I read somewhere that it was for Donut and above. I could be wrong.

According to the article it's meant for 2.0 or above, but I guess it's worth a shot on 1.5.

I think it was on Engadget that said this will be for 2.0 and up. Disappointing, but we still have Opera right? :p

Firefox now available for Android 2.0 and above, still at pre-alpha stage -- Engadget

Damn you beat me while I was grabbing the linky... lol.

I'm trying it out as well.....10mb .apk file...

    ::: EDIT :::

Didn't work on my Eris, is this file so large because it is an alpha release?
Before uninstalling it took up 30mb on my Eris, I can't imagine that's anywhere near correct

That is correct, it really is that big. Oh well, I like to test things out. And I would love to test out a mobile Firefox browser. I guess I'll just wait and see what new builds bring.

Uh...yeah, it's this thread! ;) Trust me, I searched. This is the original Fennec thread in the Eris section. I don't want to discuss how it works on other devices, I only care how it works/doesn't work with the Eris since that is the device I use.
