Things on that list don't show up unless they've pushed to you. No matter how many times you check, nothing will show up on that list unless it's already been pushed to you. Checking for an update won't make it come sooner.
My Droid, Incredible, and X would all have updates available before any notification was shown. The notifications are not pushed. Your phone checks for them, which is not that often.

You may not receive the notification, but I can say with 100% certainty that your phone does not ping for them, at least on a default Android installation. If it's in your available download list, it's been sent to you OTA.
It's going to be announced on here and every other Android site virtually immediately after the push starts. So I'm sure I'll hear about it without compulsively checking for updates on the phone...
In all honesty, you only miss out on 2.2 for a few hours at best. People like us check Google Reader and other sites enough that we would ever miss the 2.2 release.

I have never checked for an update. I will just wait for an announcement or something that it has been released. I'm not too concerned about updating to 2.2 right now.
