Force Your Phone to Check for a System Update

From Gizmodo:

You've just read or heard that your phone is due for an update—maybe just bug fixes, or possibly a big version upgrade. But your phone claims there's nothing doing. Dial this keypad combination to force a "checkin" and possible upgrade. If there's no update available for your phone from your carrier, then this trick won't magically compile and distribute one, of course. But there can be a lag between when a carrier makes an update available and when your phone checks in to see if it's available—even if you hit the Settings menu, choose About phone, and click the "Check for system updates" option. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't—but it doesn't hurt.

To get your phone into the queue right away, dial *#*#checkin#*#*, substituting the dial pad numbers for the letters.

So it should be *#*#2432546#*#* --- is that correct or did I mis-interpret your post?

I try that and nothing happens - the dialing area goes blank.

Check the notification drop-down. The assumption is that if "checkin succeeded" (as my phone reports) and there was nothing else in the reply, that there's nothing to push from the server.

This will only prove to be disappointing for everyone. There is no update to check for.

To some, frequently checking for updates has become something of a "sport," and they've authored numerous postings declaring that they don't want to wait the required 24 hours to check again. Others have received error messages when normally checking for updates, and this provides an alternate means by which they can foster a state of disappointment within themselves and those around them. It makes one appreciate the other, more relevant components of their existence.

What a crock of s... How is this a "tip" or "trick" when it doesn't do anything?

It forces a server check rather than having to wait 24 hours between update requests. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less. As the article states, "If there's no update available for your phone from your carrier, then this trick won't magically compile and distribute one."

There are no miracles promised from what is only billed as alternative to the phone's sometimes successful, sometimes unsuccessful attempt to communicate with the server. Other than this, expect nothing special, because...
