If you are talking about a screen lock password, then after a fixed number of incorrect entries your phone should prompt you for the password for the gmail account the phone is registered to. If that doesn't work, shut off the phone, log into the gmail account on a website and change the password using Google's password recovery. Once the new password is confirmed, turn on the phone and try using the new password.

If your tab can be connected to WiFi then you can recover your password through mail. If not then you have to perform the hard rest. Also if you have forgot the mail account id with which your tab is connected then also you have to perform the hard reset..
The only drawback of hard reset is that you will lose all the data of the tab.
I found this unlocking video on Youtube, but here the tablet is connected to internet.
