Wow! I knew that Samsung was putting a lot of weight behind the Galaxy S but having this so soon makes my head spin! They're pouring a TON of resources into this line of hardware! Any fear I had of glitches being fixed in a timely manner just got the warm fuzzy it needed :)

We can't expect and OTA update anytime soon though. The source of the firmware leak says it is a TEST only and the real thing won't be here til september

"We have to say this is the first TEST firmware of samsung mobile!"

"If you want you can wait on the official Android 2.2 update.
    This will come allround September."

The Captivate will get it's official update AFTER the Galaxy S does.

Unless they're spending all their resources on Froyo and not fixing the GPS issue :) In all seriousness I completely agree.

At least we know they're working on it, even if it's only a test release.

True... I knew it would happen eventually. Samsung has confirmed that many times.

Let's hope that someone at XDA can make this Captivat compatible. Tomorrow we should also know if the update fixes the Galaxy S GPS problems.

That is def awesome. I have been looking for conformation, I have read that 2.1 only allows for 256mb of system memory to be accessed. I have read that 2.2 will read 512mb does anyone know if there is any truth to any of these?

Yes...Froyo uses the 2.6.32 Linux kernel that enables HIGHMEM support for ARM processors...allowing use of the remaining 256MB of RAM.

That is awesome man... So there was truth to the stuff I read. That was what I was concerned with finding out. This should rlly wake our phones up big time allowing it to access another 256mb of memory. THANK YOU

+1 There! I've used custom ROMs, but 2 months isn't ANYTHING to wait for an official release!

From what I understand, you can still receive OTA updates, but the update MAY reset your root privileges. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

You'll get it in September if you have a International Galaxy S... Captivate will be later...

Samsung has announced the Korean 2.2 will officially be out in early August.

Yep....as long as you don't flash a Custom ROM that blocks out OTA updates. You can even flash the leaked 2.2 Froyo when it gets ported, as long as the developer does't block out the OTA feature. But be warned that if you accept the OTA update, you lose root access. Getting root back in 2.2 may not be as easy as it was in 2.1. That's why developers make ROMs that block out the OTA feature and just build ROMs as the leaked or official version comes in.

Trust me, we'll unofficially have Froyo on the Captivates before September.

Perhaps a buggy test version... But it'll be something, and if it improves the GPS I'll flash it!

The only thing I can see being buggy would be the TW. Android has released 2.2 Froyo already, so the basis of it should be excellent, which should mean, GPS will be fixed. As far as the TW UI goes, I can see that being a little buggy. It's virtually the same build, Samsung and TW just have to adapt to Froyo's new features like A2SD (Apps2SD) and so on. CyanogenMod has Froyo already in the works, just no TW UI. When the leaked version of Froyo gets released, trust me, developers will work to fix any issue.

Also one more thing, sometimes tests aren't as buggy as people may think they are. They definitely won't be flawless, but it'll be near complete though.

I'd do a 2.2 today because I'm already using an alternative to TW (LP). I do need root access though for a couple of apps.

Good news, but the timing may be off for folks on the 30 day return clock.

It will be more like December after - you'll have to wait until AT&T gets done crippling and bloating it.
