Frustration with Nexus 7 tablet and Lollipop

Earlier this week I received an popup message that an OS update was available for my Nexus 7 (2012). As I have done in the past I accepted and waited for it to install.
Since it has been installed its rendered my tablet almost useless.
Chrome constantly freezes then screen goes black and eventually may come back on after 20 mins, or I have to shutdown and restart. Videos are horrible to watch, both streaming and from device, shutter and audio problems. Facebook will unexpectedly shut down after 2-3 mins of viewing. Switching from app to app can take 30 secs or more if it will even switch. Often I touch the home button and wait minutes for it to acknowledge and go to screen.
I'm the only one in my family who has an android, everyone else has an apple and I know they have had small issues with OS updates but not to this extent.
I was happy with my device up until this point, the fact that even Google Chrome is causing problems leads me to believe the new OS was not tested properly on all platforms prior to release.
If Lollipop was not designed to run on 7 2012 why was it even pushed to it.
I have tried the cache clearing as suggested on many forums and it did appear to make a minor improvement but certainly not what is needed.
I really do not want to factory reset my device, how quick is Google with providing patches.

Google is usually quick depending on how much bug reports they get back. They can't fix a bug they can't find, and more reports makes it easier for them. You're the first one I've seen with this though. Any reason why you just can't back up and factory reset?

It's recommended, but not essential to FDR after any major software update.

From everything I have read, even resetting to factory settings does not solve problem as the OS will stay with 5.0. There have been complicated instructions for removing the 5.0 and re installing 4.4 but I am not prepared to go that route yet. Hopefully the more people log complaints and reports their crashes etc... it will get a fix sooner than later.

Based on what I've read above I must be lucky. Lollipop is running fast, smooth and stable on my 2012 & 2013 Nexus 7 tablets as well as my Nexus 5.

I got each pushed to my devices this week.

I have the N7 2012. It was sluggish before I updated to lollipop. Used to be fine then one day it was awful and stayed that way. Each time it lagged I would kill chrome and google playstore and it would be fine again. But I got tired of that routine. I did a ota to lollipop and got even more lag. So I did a titanium backup, basic factory reset, new account restore feature with my phone, titanium restore and now it's wonderful again. Still rooted too.

It's good to hear everything turned out well for you. My Nexus 5 & 7 have become my favorites over the last year of use.

Doing a factory reset is not to go back to old version of the OS. That has never been possible. It's basically a reformat and reinstall of the new OS. It will run better because there will be no leftover files or contradicting app settings which may have created errors in registry or something along those lines.

You know how a PC may bog down over time with use, or give errors, but after you reformat and reinstall the OS it runs way better because it's been cleaned out? That's the same reason for a factory reset.

You want it to stay at 5.0, a factory reset just helps it run smoother. [emoji6]

My Nexus 7 is now almost a brick thanks Google. Switch off almost all syncing, clean all cache, stop using Chrome and say use say Maxthon and things improve a bit but come on Google this needs a fix

Did the full factory reset, with fingers crossed, but everything appears to be working great. Except for setting up all my email etc accounts it seems fine. Will keep the thread updated as I use my apps.

If you still want your N7 to work and not be glitchy, you should reflash KK 4.4.4.

I had the same issue and went back as I could not stand the lag.

I did a factory reset yesterday, limited the background apps to two, etc. And already this morning I've had two hangups, a Facebook kickout, and stuttering while typing. Crap.

I'm on 5.0 and have had all the problems everyone else has. Did FDR, no help. I'm tech savvy but haven't rooted a phone or flashed a ROM. Any suggestions on fairly simple way to go back to 4.4.4 on my N7 (2012)?

Ok I did yet another factory reset and this time I was careful about what apps I reinstalled (if I had not used them for a while they did not go back on). There is a noticeable improvement, Facebook still caused problems so I took it off, Flipboard is working better so I access Facebook via that. Chrome is still slow so still using Maxthon browser which is quite fast. Overall it seems to be working normally it does hang from time to time but overall a huge improvement, fingers crossed.

If you really don't want to do a factory reset and your device isn't already encrypted there is another option - You can encrypt your device. This will force your whole flash drive to be safely rewritten without losing anything, and as a side effect this should restore the responsiveness of your tablet, just like a factory reset would.

I was in exactly the same position as you, after it's Lollipop upgrade my Nexus 7 was completely unusable. 10-30 seconds to go to the home screen. Ditto to bring up the task switcher or a keyboard and it frequently rebooted for no reason. Browsing the Web was like swimming through treacle.

Running benchmarks suggested that that it was slow, but not crippled. On a hunch, knowing that a factory reset wipes the storage, I thought that if wiping the storage works, what about rewriting it all? This afternoon I encrypted my tablet and the difference was night and day. Home screen, keyboard, the fancy new Lollipop task switcher all complete within a few seconds. It even displays complex web pages such as the ingress intel map in a reasonable time.

Of course it isn't all good news. Encryption takes a hit on performance too on an old tablet like the N7 without encryption acceleration. Sequential read is down from 24.71MB/s to 2.45MB/s (Androbench), while random read is down from 5.22MB/s to 2.12MB/s. Sequential and random writes suffer similar drops, but while the measured storage performance has gone down, the actual tablet is much faster. I have traded an unpredictable and crippling loss of performance for a quantifiable, consistent loss of prformance, and for me that's a good deal.

When I feel I can face a factory reset I will re-install my nexus from scratch without encryption and I will get back both the performance I lost over time and the performance lots to encryption, but for now I'm happy having my old tablet back, but with a fresh new, bang up to date face. I now can't wait for my Moto G 4G to get it's Lollipop upgrade.
