I want to buy a card holder and charger for my Galaxy. This is an example
    type sold on eBay:

When I orientate the Galaxy as in the picture, it seems to me that the
camera button ends up right below the upper of the three clips. For
obvious reasons, I want all buttons to be unobstructed.

Is it safe to order this holder? If not, please post a link to the type you
    are successfully using. Thanks.

Im no expert, but honestly it looks like it could be put in either way, like with the camera button facing down as well as up.
could be wrong, but i dont see why i would make a difference which way you put it in the holder.

    anyway, hope that helps! =]

Like Dave said, those car holders can be put in any positions...but...if you turn it around 180 degrees that upper clip could end up where the volume buttons are.
I have one of these turned 180 degrees but it need a little convincing to fit a galaxy (galaxy appears to be 1mm thicker then i900 at least when mounted in that car holder) ). Can be "convinced" easily with hot air. I'm very happy with the result. Hope this helps.

if you turn it around 180 degrees, the screen won't orientate properly if you're running cupcake or donut

anyway, judging by the picture and comparing to my own galaxy, it looks to me like that clip fits between the camera and the screen-lock buttons

They're suggesting turning the holder upside down, I believe, rather than the phone.

I thought that too, but having just looked at my handset again I'm not sure; there's not a lot in it, certainly.

now that you mention it, i see biggdaniell certainly meant that, but i'm not so sure about dave:

it is a tight fit, i certainly wouldn't buy one without trying it or hearing confirmation from someone with first hand experience; but again, going by the pic, i wouldn't say the clip is any closer to the camera button than it is to the lock-screen button

I was thinking more that the clip was too wide and could potentially foul on both buttons. Hard to tell from that little picture TBH, it could be fine (if say the actual contact point was proud of the rest of the clip and smaller).

Personally, if I was buying a car kit I'd take the Brodit option. They're not the cheapest, but they're about the best I've come across. Modular too, so you can swap the Galaxy front-end for a $something_else front end without changing the car-side half if you use different devices (say if your partner uses the car also).

Same question here. How do you charge the phone given it's pressed
on the top where the micro USB port is?

you can't charge using the samsung phone holder. the one xenon bought has a down side which I forgot to mention. the clip fits onto your phone so it makes a mark on the phone as well as it can eventually break off.

I bought this one from pdair.com:
PDair Universal Car Holder by PDair - PDair.com
... its not a great success on a non-encases phone as the big gumby arms press on all the side buttons no matter how you sit it in there.

However, combined with this (that I also bought):

PDair Aluminum Metal Case for Samsung i7500 Galaxy - Open Screen Design (Black) by PDair - PDair.com
... it works a treat, as the case stops the buttons being pressed.

A downside of the case is that it makes pressing the far left and right keys on the onscreen keyboard (Q, P, uppercase toggle, delete) a pain in the arse. I just flip it open if I plan on writing a novel, otherwise you just use your left hand to do the very right-most keys (P, delete) and your right hand to do the left-most keys (Q, uppercase toggle) to prevent the case from stopping your fingers hitting the screen.

My purchase arrived. I haven't put it in the car yet. However, I can comment
on the fit between the holder and the Galaxy. It is not perfect. The middle clip
doesn't "hug" the phone. It presses down on the side of the phone with the pin
that should be "hugging" the screen. As if the holder was designed for a somewhat
thinner device. On the back of the holder it says "I-900" which is an
even thicker phone that the Galaxy, so I don't know what's the matter.

As it is, it seems that the phone could drop out of the holder if I encounter
    some bigger bumps.

I have the impression that if I play with fire a bit and melt the holder somewhat,
I can shape it to hug the Galaxy. I'm going to do it later.

Xenon, check out the 3rd post in this thread. That is exactly what I had for galaxy and yes it can easily be shaped with hot air to fit the phone. It's cheap and it's quite good.
