I remember seeing the same suggestion once before. I did disable Voice Privacy although I can not find anything in my web searches that explains in layman's terms what that option does. As for DTMF tones, I can't understand why that would have anything to do with the mic issue (even after reading Early's post) and since I have had issues with automated calls not recognizing my phone's tones when set to long, I left those on Normal. Personally, the idea seems questionable as it still doesn't address why only a small percentage of us are experiencing the issue. And of course, I don't remember WHEN I disabled Voice Privacy in order to reliably tell you whether it made a difference regarding our mutual problem.
