I really regret getting this phone.... i cant connect it to anything... i used to be able to connect it to my mac as mass media storyage with debugging on... they i just decided to connect it to my pc with Kies.... but windows kept saying USB device not recognised.....

os i tried it on a windows xp laptop.. still said the same thing.. ive jus connected it back to my mac.... and now i cant even get it to connect to that... although there is a sound on the phone when i plug it in...

ive reformatted the phone and still no luck... this is the worst phone experiance ive ever had...

The problem *I* think isn't so much the phone, as it is Kies. The software and design is just horrible. Virtually everyone has problems with it. I just saw this post but I've got to head to work so I don't have time to really package all the information up nice.

This is what I did to make sure it works.

    1) Uninstall old versions of Kies.
    2) Run registry cleaner (e.g. CCCleaner) to clean out some of the stupid leftover entries related to the phone drivers (if I didn't do this, it would never properly install the drivers)
    3) using a program you can find on the internet called "FileSearcherforKiesFix" (Some guy created this and you can find more info on the forum ) mount your phone as a mass storage device and then scan through for long file names and delete those files (the program automatically searches out those files for you) This has caused problems with Kies connecting in the past (and present)
    4) un-mount, discount from USB. Install latest Kies.
    5) DISCONNECT other USB devices, external harddrives, etc.
    6) re-connect the phone in Kies mode (You must be idle under the TWlauncher launcer. I needed to switch out of ADW/Launcher Pro) and it should install. If not, you might need a reboot, but it eventually just installed for me and detected on Kies.

    I hope this helps.

Also, check two things with your Mac
    1. make sure you ejected it before unplugging the device (this really shouldn't matter but I can vouch that it does), and if you didn't plug it into a different usb port and see if it will work (that worked for me).
    2. also, if using one of the keyboard usb's check that it is getting enough voltage or whatever (I have some thumb drives that work fine through the keyboard ports, but some that don't, and my phone and iPod won't connect through it at all)

so the long and short I guess is try a different usb port on the Mac, that solved my issues for both the GS and my N1

I do think its my phone.... It worked on my mac before by using the mass media connection with development ticked..... And now it isnt...... Ive downloaded latest kies and did what you said with cleaning up regestr for windows and still no luck..

Tried it on a total of 4 computers and it jist does nothing... Before on my mac in the notification tab it knew when i plugged a cable abd let me click mount... Now nothing comes up at all..... Done a restore... Ive checked the cable....etc

Hi folks, really sorry to be a big old pain in the A** but i've tried all the above and still can't get my phone to connect to Kies.

    I'm on T-mobile UK - currently have fw 2.1update1, baseband - XXJF3, rooted 2.6.29 root@SE-S602 #2

I'm getting really fed up with not being able to back up my files but really love the phone.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can point me in the right direction.

    Thanks a lot

    (also am using kies 1.5.3)

The only thing that worked for me, after unmounting, formatting etc etc...was opening KIES, turning off the SGS, connecting SGS to USB, then turning SGS back on. That worked for me twice on the trot, and now my SGS is sporting the official version of Froyo.

    Hope this helps.

I have the permanent "connecting to device" message in Kies too, even though the MTP (?) Application on the phone goes through "initializing" and after about a minute says "connected". I have not found a satisfactory fix for this yet...

Connect while in USB debug mode. And when connected, pull down the notification menu and select USB connected. Then mount the phone.

Sometimes it does the connectiong to Kies for me as well, and it just sits there. I usually reset everything (unplug other usb devices, restart the computer, run kies, and then plug the SGS back in)

-Again, for me if I have anything else plugged in, Kies really doesn't like it so I only plug the cable for the SGS USB in
    - My phone is set to Kies under USB
    - I've restarted, before I bother running anything else I've run Kies
    - *Note* I know in the past I've had a successful driver install for my phone, when the driver would fail to install (to detect the device even once) I had to remove everything and clean the registry.

I had to use the long file name fix whenever I noticed the connection' screen on my phone display 'resets' a lot. That is.. you'll see it show the screen to connect, then it will blink and seem to load the screen again. When it actually WORKS the screen is constantly there without blinking/reloading.

Not much to go on, we all have our hands tied by Samsung here.

ok well here are.. some 3 hours later my phone is a clean factory restored (hopefully) unrooted clean sheet.

Won' bore you with the details but i got stuck whilst unrooting, and pretty much had to do a system restore.

So anyway that's done - tried all the above again and still no joy. Plus my phone now won't connect to my home wifi either...

Really not doing well tonight at all!! :(

    Hi Folks,
Just got my Galaxy S today and have run into and resolved some issues. I still have one outstanding, but I saw this thread and I hope my experience may be of some help.

I was having no luck getting my phone to talk to my Windows XP box using the Kies application. Tried two different computers, reboots, etc. Finally, I turned off the Wi-Fi and GPS, plugged the phone back into the computer and it worked like a charm. Recognized by Kies, and Windows.

I've now copied most of my music library onto the phone, but only seeing maybe 1/3 of the albums. I know the files are all on the phone, and they can be played, but they aren't being picked up by either Winamp or the default "Music Play" app. Both apps can play some of the (haven't tried all yet) of the missing songs, so not sure what the issue is!

still getting "connected" on phone and "connecting to device" on kies.

I know you mentioned that you tried everything above. I just wanted to make sure you used the "FileSearcherforKiesFix.exe" to remove all the invalid file names off your phone. That was what kept my screen on the connecting forever...

I had Wifi on the whole time.. and still worked for me. Looks like everyone's problems are a different thing. So hard to recreate the exact environment.

    hi Guys
I had the same problems as you guys have.

To solve the problem, I crated backup of all my files, concatcs etc.

To solve the problems do those few steps:

    1. Backup all your content, contacts, files etc
    2. Disconnect you phone from PC
    3. Uninstall the Kies
    4. Format your phone
    5. Install the Kies again
    6. Restart your phone
    7. Finaly, connect your phone to Kies, all problems should be solved now.

This should work for every one...

This may or may not fulfill some of the needs being talked about here. But another useful program is ES File Explorer. Free from the market. You can log onto your network over wifi ... just give it an ip address and login details and it's set up, you can browse and copy to/from your pc.

Facing the same problem. The MTP problem has been there for two weeks now.
Yesterday, Kies detected the the handset and started updating to Froyo. It failed to complete the download and upgrade bombed!
Today, Kies updated to Version _102. The MTP error stays. This has become a real waste of time for the last few weeks. I am apprehensive to format my phone. Have tried all other techniques listed in all forums.
This is absolutely frustrating that Samsung provides such crappy software with what is other wise a great phone.

sorry, if i repeat someone. but kies connects only if debugging mode is off and through kies you can only upgrade as soon as your carrier offers an upgrade!
