Good move by Samsung, though it absolves carriers who thought this feature was available at launch.

I'm guessing this update is a way for the carrier to tell if you're running stock or a stock based rom?

Allows the app to be moved but not app data, will have to test as some of the apk files are huge now.

I just checked on my phone, no luck yet. And wow it takes a long time to check for an update. On my Nexus devices, they were quick to tell me "No updates, stop bothering me!". This GS4 takes a few minutes to get your hopes up before bringing the disappointment.

Definitely a welcome update, especially for Verizon users who get 16GB internal memory and a ton of bloatware. My test VZW S4 came preloaded with all that stuff, leaving only 10GB free. You can disable it, but can't remove it unless you are rooted. So it will help to move other apps to SD, since traditionally the stock apps (and bloatware) will have to stay on the phone.

Well tested the firmware a little and it does allow you to move the app only, for large data files mainly from game downloads you still need to use something like foldermount.

But this will save some space for sure and now rooted users can move the app and data which is nice.

    Good job Samsung. :)

Interface lag is pretty much gone, usually I force it to lag by enabling and disabling wifi/data but I can't reproduce it now, it's gone. :D

But there is still a delay when starting apps.

HDR video mode is pretty cool, great Samsung enabled that for us. ;)

I like the sound of 'Semi-transparent status bar' but I have UK Vodafone so I guess I'll be waiting a bit longer

That makes no practical sense. The DMR and secure keys are almost always in the core install files and not the data (especially older apps). Also, the data files are usually 90% of the total files (on average). Not seeing how this is a good job. Even worse, a lot of newer games are a few megs on the app side and 1GB or more on the data side.

The reason the data was moved to SD and not the whole app was mainly security and stability. That is an absolute NUTS update for the app space issue and could cause more problems than correct. This helps almost nobody, since if you are installing tiny apps with no or tiny data files, you will probably not have a storage problem anyway.

Nope, I was being too politically correct: That is a pure stupid solution for app storage and surpasses common ground for logic and the premise of human existence. A black whole has developed in the aura of such a doofus solution. Strong enough to suck souls through it.

Samsung devs going nuts? Dumb app storage solution for S4 and borked the radios on the S3 (a one year old, mature device).

    Added 2:

Are you sure that is correct? If so, I need to watch for the black hole and its vortex :)

To mock and make fun of the app storage solution, or to see if really true? That said, some that are indifferent to the app storage will want the other stuff anyway.

Funny thing is a lot of apps now use your Google account to verify ownership, so almost all of the apps in those cases are stored as data. A few megs will be moved to the SD and over 1GB stays internal. That is over 200:1 for an inefficiency ratio. One whole half percent moved to sd. HUGE! ;)

Edit: Surely that can not be the update solution for storage.

Yeah they really needed to make it App + Data like it used to be. This is only a partial solution, and root is still required to move the Data, which takes up most of the memory.

I'll be installing it over the wkd, but more for the apparent speed increases and camera fixes than the moving app feature.

I wonder if it will be preinstalled if I pick up an S4 this week? Should I wait until next week?
