Galaxy S4 update allows app to sd move

Yeah they really needed to make it App + Data like it used to be. This is only a partial solution, and root is still required to move the Data, which takes up most of the memory.

I'll be installing it over the wkd, but more for the apparent speed increases and camera fixes than the moving app feature.

From what I remember this is exactly how it was before, app to sd never moved data.

But yeah the new firmware is worth installing for the fixes alone, no lag at all now for me. Really impressed with this update.

The grasp of it is, no matter what Sammy do regarding the storage issue people will still moan because that's what us humans do!

So choosing to move something that will have virtually no effect and likely make the device less stable is a good thing? This will only help people that will not have a problem anyway. the whole point of concern is the lack of app storage and they went the route to save maybe 10% to 20%, where it could have been 80% to 90%- based on average app verses data size for the games and apps that hog space in the first place.

The previous method moved the app data and not the app core. That is why games would show in internal as a small part and the sd card a lot more.

Then don't get it. You can always put a 64gb sd card in it. 16gb is plenty of space for internal storage. I love this phone.

Thanks for the advice, however my comment of "no sale" indicates that I have already chosen to not be purchase the 16GB model" for reasons that have been argued ad nauseum.

While I would consider a 16GB model, the recent ability to move off applications to an SD card is limited, as app data remains on the local memory. It also potentially compromises stability and performance given that most applications have not been written to run from anything other than the local memory. If there were a way to have a phone incorporate and recognize add-on SD memory as a "single volume", I would jump, however we are not at that point.

I consider myself a novice power user, and use my phone for both work and play. I'll continue my search for a phone that meets my individual requirements.

Regards,
Spence

Completely understand what you're saying buddy! I was simply just saying no matter what is done even if its 6 months down the line there will still be moans

This is how I remember it too. My previous HTC (Desire, Vivid, Inspire) and also my original Samsung Note never moved data to the SD, just the app. Data was always stored in internal.

It's a nice option to reenable, but I've stopped moving apps to sd when the newer Samsungs didn't have that option and personally I found it sometimes to be buggy in the past so I probably won't use it.

rushmore, you're never getting a GS4, unless somehow Verizon pulls a rabbit out of the hat, so what does it matter to you anyway. ;) But in any case, I don't think that is correct - previously it was always the app core that was moved, not app data. I recall many times being unable to run a game stored on the SD because I did not have enough internal memory to store the data that it was trying to download... especially on that HTC Desire that had a paltry 384mb or so of internal memory.

You might respectfully get it less, since depends on what apps you use. I notice that people asking for larger models are not impugning people that are happy with the 9GB, but there are PLENTY of people trying to apply their own standard that the 9/16GB is fine for everyone. Too "socialistic" for me, thank you ;)

I don't think Samsung gets it, either. I have mentioned this having a chance of happening and got flamed. Looks like it is happening after all:

I've seen no evidence to say my device is less stable with applications on my sdcard, I've not seen a single crash, all the apps work just fine.

Also I saved quite a bit of space moving apps to the the sdcard, just over 1GB. If you have allot of apps installed it adds up to quite allot, even if the app is small relative to the data in games that isn't the case the all apps on the market.

It is still a tiny fraction of the app size that do consume a lot of storage. The smaller apps are not going to fill most S4s up. The ones with data files will.

Counter intuitive effort, though perhaps all they could do based on framework changes. Seems the sales issues have them scurrying for solutions to change the trend direction.

Give it a rest, the app-to-sd feature update is more likely in response to recent media attention over the issue.

It has nothing to do with sales, it's already their fastest selling phone and I don't think anyone but shareholders gives a crap about them falling short of targets.

Not seeing how a hollow solution that still misleads customers with a false sense of a fix is rest worthy. It is complacency that provides the acquiesced path for such corporate shenanigans.

Long live the resistance! Well, until another device comes along that is 32gb S3 replace worthy, for us shameful people that play games on their phone :)

and this is why I left HTC and came to samsung ... They promised and upgrade to the DINC 2 to be available last August ... it's never been released.

If you're talking about a GB to ICS upgrade, every manufacturer messed that up. Just look at the issues the s2 had.

Samsung and Verizon just royally screwed up the s3 with its last ota for premium suite.

My point being, there's no getting away from it. If you want guaranteed fast upgrades, you need to be on a nexus device. If you aren't running a nexus, buy a phone for what it has when you buy it, not what you hope it might get around the corner.

htc lied. I fired them.

To be fair, HTC might have held up its end of the bargain. They might have produced a valid update that Verizon either didn't approve of or never bothered testing. As Rxpert83 mentioned, the only way to guarantee yourself official updates is with an unlocked gsm Nexus. Any other device puts you at the mercy of either the manufacturer or the carrier, if not both.

htc never said this but I suppose it's possible (in fact, both HTC and VZW "blamed" HTC). I guess I'll find out for sure when the first major update comes out for the S4. I can see how far behind VZW is.

That device though was in the day of mainly small or no data files ;) The real and only solution is for Samsung to work with carriers to offer larger sizes. Instead, they have chosen a path of misleading customers. Regardless if out of ignorance or knowing better, that is what it is.

Do the carriers not know the call center grief they shall get? Cheap card issues, swap issues, and non user unmount glitches that happen, but people do not notice with just media on the SD card. Apps vanish until the device is restarted, but media syncs. Why? Android removed apps 2 sd resource functions from JB. Anything created is no different from a modder doing their thing.

The irony still being this update will not help the people that would have more likely had storage issues.

It's not hollow, it's already saved me 1GB. I've seen no advertising from Samsung regarding this fix other than a changelog noting the feature so they're not misleading anyone or claiming it's a solution.

Also the feature is exactly as it was previously, it moves the app and that's all, it never moved data as it's upto the developer where that data goes, they could give us a choice and let us install on the sdcard.

I play games and I'm very happy with the S4, I would prefer more internal storage but it's not a big deal as I use foldermount and now apps to sd as well. :D

I think it is a semantics issue for the data, since GTA used to move the data to sd card and a small fraction stayed in storage with the previous Android method. If you can move GTA 3 and just have a few megs in the internal, this is the same apps 2 sd method. GTA 3 is the same install script since launch. I like modding that game.

I have to say that this is a big fuss about very little.

If you want your phone to fulfil its potential you have to root. If you have rooted, you can use foldermount and a 64GB SD card. Despite the dire warnings about how the world will come to an end if apps have to read their data from the SD card, I have been doing exactly this for more than two years and it has never caused me a problem.

This is my guess. Now they can honestly say that you can move apps to sd, whether or not it solves the problem for those for whom it is a problem.

But to be fair, the shareholders are probably the only people whose opinions the management care about ;)
