My old Moto Droid is starting to get long in the tooth. I'm thinking of upgrading to the Droid X and giving my Droid to my mom (try to get here into tech more). I'm likely going to get one off ebay since I keep on a month-to-month w/ Verizon and don't want to go to a contract if possible.

I'm not really into custom roms or anything though I'll probably try to root it to remove some of the crapware. I use my phone primarily for data. Right now I get about 55 hours+ w/ my Droid on Factory 2.2. So it's a big deal t get at least 24 hours on a charge (likely get the ext battery since it doesn't seem to increase size much). I use my phone for email/web, as my primary music player in my car, and some video (not much atm). I get good 3G in my area an hour south of Raliegh, NC. I expect we'll likely not see 4G until late 2011 at the earliest unless Verizon really pushes rollout.

With that said, my main questions about the X are about the motoblur and any issues. I played w/ an X at the store and didn't notice anything major (can't really do much though). Is is really as bad as I've seen stated or is it just taken out of context? Besides that, any other issues.

Yeah I agree with Tom, if you are not worried about the locked bootloader then I would say get the X. I have had zero problems with mine, it has been a great phone so far.

I don't think Verizon is going to have any 4g phones before Q1 of next year

I doubt there will be any 4g phones until the beginning of 2011, but that is just my opinion.

4G is only going to be data cards for laptops/PCs initially. Plus, the first generation of 4G phones are going to be battery killers if you actually use the 4G data (witness the Evo), and you'll pay a surcharge on the 4G plan.

4G is not worth waiting for unless you can stick it out at LEAST 6 months.

There's always something better around the corner. It's the world of electronics - nothing is ever stable, and every time you buy something, a month later it'll be outdone by the next latest and greatest. Buy something when it's time to buy something new. Don't play the waiting game. Only time I think it's worth playing the waiting game is if something has already been announced and the specs are exactly what you want, so you wait until release.

While I was researching I also found some issues about the internal storage. Is is really locked down or just not easily accessible. If it just meants copying things manually w/ astro of something that's no problem.

if there was one phone i'd wait for, it'd be the Tegra 2 Phone from NVIDIA. Gingerbread with heavier emphasis on gaming, it'd be a huge hit. I'm thinking they are going to tie this in with Google's rumored foray into social networking centered on gaming.

its rumored to go on AT&T though. no confirmation if Verizon will get it.

^ I just don't see why you would wait for "rumors" and "no confirmation" and an operating system that doesn't exist yet.

i would think it's too late to jump on the droid x knowing that there's going to be something "better" coming out right around the corner. if you can wait, wait.
if not, it's a great phone if you arent into modding, custom roms, etc.
motorblur negatives are blown out of proportion. just remove those widgets, find better apps that do the same thing, and problem is solved.
i LOVE this phone and will probably be keeping it for the next 2 years.

I just got an X for the following reasons:
-I really like the build quality... it just feels like a well built phone
-From what I hear it has the best phone reception out of all the high-end android phones
-Very good voice quality due to noise cancelling mics
-Best battery life out of the high-end androids
-No major hardware issues that I'm aware of

    Issues to be aware of:
-Locked bootloader. If you don't run custom roms and aren't into hacking then this isn't an issue.
-Motoblur stuff. I prefer the sense interface over motoblur but motoblur on the X is still very usable. You also always have the option of going to the market to install alternate software to resolve any issues you might have with motoblur (i.e. if you want sense like widgets, install launcher pro, if you want a T9 dialer get dialer one, etc.).

    Also... as far a waiting...
I bought now because from everything I've seen the X is fast enough for what I neeed.

All the newly announced/released phones (android, the new windows phone 7 phones, etc.) are all running chipsets that are the same or slower then what the X has with the exception of the Galaxy S phones... but they have issues I wasn't willing to accept.

There may be some new chips coming around january of next year... possibly some dual core (although I'm skeptical that these will show up in phones by then, they will probably be in tablets) or slightly higher clocked single core chips. If you are all about speed (or if you are interested in the iphone on verizon) I'd say wait until January. Otherwise I'm of the opinion that the X is one heck of a phone and will be for the next one to two years.

What about the internal memory. Is it really locked down to just apps? I'd like to be able to put my ringtones and frequent music [like my favorites playlist] on the interneral and leave the SD for other stucff. I don't mind getting a bigger SD but one of the main things I like about having the driod is it a capable device that lets me avoid carrying several other devices around.
