I looked at the tutorials for enabling tethering, and they all involve uninstalling TetheringProvision (after rooting the phone).

Well, I found an easier way.

    1) Go to Settings>Applications>All

    2) Scroll down until you see TetheringProvision and then click on it

    3) Click "force stop" and "disable"

That's it! Enjoy your 'free' mobile hotspot.

FYI - I just bought my phone last week (first android), so if your software is different, this may not work for you.

It might be under manage applications, but I don't think Gingerbread has the disable option.

I hate to be the one that says the obvious but isn't it just easier to load up a custom rom that has that function included? Like CM for example or something else.

Also you are aware that T-Mobile or your provider will know you are tethering as your traffic will skyrocket, after which when you do not have the hotspot plan they will jack your bill with fees and charges from here to the moon because you breached their terms and conditions. This is just a caution sign and it is just informing you that if you found a work around use it only in special cases which are few and far in between and do not abuse it because you will get punished.

I can confirm that T-Mobile will freeze your data if you get caught tethering too much. They did that to my wife. She had to call to get her data back and then she voluntarily added tethering for a few months, so they didn't charge her additional fees.

Ha, my data use skyrocketed when I GOT this phone (went from averaging two to five). :D

oh just for reference I had a samsung dart for over 2 years and hotspot was free with this phone but i just got a new samsung galaxy s2 from a friend and upon switching to that i discovered my hotspot was gone, tmobile told me i had to pay an extra 15 dollars for something ive already had free with 5gb of data a month included in my plan so i was unwilling to add hotspot for 15 extra bucks just because i got a new phone, thats totally not fair when 5gb of data is already included in my plan that i pay for why should i have to pay an extra 15 just to add hotpot to share with my other devices, its that same data, no matter what. It's like they had buyer/givers remorse for giving me the plan that i have for so cheap long ago and not wanting to give me that anymore because of the huge 5gb limit i have, it's not my fault that it was special promotion at the time and i decided i liked it and have kept it without changing it ever since.
Anyway so now i can use my hotspot just like before but now with the new phone, i'm paying for the data anyway it was so unfair that they wanted extra money all of a sudden! So thank you for this thread!

I tried this before and worked like a charm, but after the last update 4.1.2 I can only Force stop the app but the Disable remains shaded and can't disable it. Maybe they "fixed" it to avoid this workaround.

So if you want to keep using the hotspot don't update to 4.1.2

Yep. The method above never worked for me, but I used to root and free hotspot worked great after I froze the tethering provision with Titanium Backup. Not even rooting allows free hotspot on 4.1.2. I think the only way to get it to work on jelly bean is to run a custom rom.
