EDIT: I should add it's using the G1

Hello all! Sorry if this is a re-post! New to the forums!

In the UK, we have a service called the BBCiPlayer. This gives us in the UK the opportunity to watch BBC programmes that we've missed previously and even watch live TV.
Well, in the past, G1 users have been unable to use the iPlayer, mainly due to the lack of Flash.

But, BBC have recently released a BETA Mobile BBCiPlayer but I'm having trouble with it.

It's here (www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/live); when I try and watch a programme, it yes I need Wifi enabled. So, I Wifi the phone up but then I get a 'incompatable file format' when I try and access the programme.

    Anyone have any idea?

    thanks!
    Aaron

bbc already support mp4 (which the iphone uses) they could simply add support if they wanted.

    edit
tried opening the links with meridian but the format was not supported.

If you click on the help link it tells you that the G1 isn't supported at the moment.

    it'll come eventually.

I changed the user agent setting in steel to report as the iphone, and although I got in to lots of menu choices for programmes, I think I was just seeing flash placeholders - nothing to press to make it play.

    can't wait tho!

This is on the Magic btw.

Wrong i'm afraid. The BBC iPlayer supports iPhone AND iPod Touch.

I know it says in the help that the G1 isnt supported, I was just wondering if an App Media Player could get it working.

    There's two things here.

The original link was for the "live" tv thing.

I was looking at iplayer - I assumed the original link wasn't correct.

I can't see android having to wait much longer - whilst I'm not sure anyone one phone is going to "kill" iphone, I think it's gonna be THE phone OS for years to come. Windows Mobile is gonna have to really raise it's game and fast.

Anyway - back on topic. Saw an iphone playing iplayer yesterday and the quality was excellent. It's not the "full" version as you get this message about wifi needing to be on, so it's checking something.

Whilst I'm very excited by this - I can't think I'd be using it apart from pose value. I don't have access to wifi all over the place - and if I'm at home I have these lovely things called a) the TV and b) My Computer. :)

oh and fyi for non-uk peeps - iplayer is not available outside the UK.

Think I've tracked this bug down, but could you run Log Collector and send me the log? My e-mail address is in BeebPlayer's market entry.

    Thanks!

    :D

All working - ta for the fix Dave.

EVERYONE should download this app now. But be careful - it lets you play with 3G (unlike iphone which is wifi only), you'll be going over your fair use limit with vodadone in no time watching these on 3g.

Dave - do you know what size these streamed vids are in MB?

Correct, it's 1.5 only, as 1.5 included various h264 fixes required to decode the iPlayer streams. Also must be in the UK as the iPlayer streams are IP-restricted.

On WiFi, the video is encoded at about 200Kib/s, so you're looking at about 50 megs for an hour long program if I've done my maths right. Adding a filesize indicator is something I'd like to do.

I also plan on adding live streams, and thanks to this thread I've got a head start now I know an RTSP url. If anyone knows the other ones for BBC2, 3, News 24 and so on, those would be rather handy (else I'll just guess).

    My twitter is twitter.com/johnsto btw.

Hehe thanks, that's fair, never thought it was perfect :)

There seem to be problems accessing the iPlayer streams from T-Mobile 3G, not sure why yet. Best bet is to use WiFi if you can for the time being.

I listen to 1Xtra from the US using BBC iplayer on my mac, if it were truly restricted by region I wouldn't be able to listen to my 1xtra mixes...
I'll give it a try to see if i can stream 1xtra radio shows on my droid
