So the new 2.3 update to Gmail that's on the Market now isn't installing. I read somewhere that this could be a problem for root users and that we would need to use Titanium Backup to uninstall Gmail before installing it again.

Has anyone who ran into this problem successfully upgraded their Gmail using Titanium Backup or some other method? How is it done?

Rooted and I had no issues. I was using version 2.2.1 before not 2.2 if that helps at all.

Are either of you running non-stock roms or anything? Or just a basic root, such as unrevoked.

It is most likely related to the ROM you are running and force uninstalling your current gmail is not likely to allow the new one to install if that is the case.

I just used system panel to close my running Gmail app and then ran the new version and it updated fine.

I restarted my phone after force uninstalling the old gmail (probably accomplishing the same thing as Musky) and managed to get it to install with Virtuous 2.7

The paid version of Titanium Backup has a setting for "Chuck Norris" mode uninstalling.

Did you restart your phone before going back to the market for it?

Yeah, me too. I used Root Explorer to move the 2.2.1 Gmail into the SD card temp folder (just in case). Still wouldn't install. Rebooted phone, then it installed fine.

Yep, that's the ticket. Either uninstall, reboot or rename with root explorer and reboot. Market downloads just fine then. Virtuous dev says not to **** with it yet, however. Too late for me but beware. V3. will fix it.

Be aware that this version will break some functionality in Voice Search, specifically "note to self."

I got it to install on the third wave ROM by uninstalling it using chuck noris option in titanium rebooting, and then installing from market :)
