Help GMail app help

Hello all, i just got my incredible yesterday and i'm loving it! However i'm having a slight issue. I have two email accounts set up on my phone, a Microsoft Activesync using HTC Mail, and my gmail account using the Gmail app. The gmail app downloads the mail as i get it, it doesn't check every 5 minutes like HTC Mail, which is what i need, instant mail. However, it doesn't give me a notification, and when i open the app, it shows new mail, but they're all marked as read, which is weird. Does anyone know what i can do to mark gmails as unread as they download?
