I have the Gmail and HTC mail apps running. when I get a new gmail, I get a notification that I have unread email (I'm not sure which app that comes from).

the HTC app has a little # that tells me how many unread messages I have. my Gmail app does not do that. should it?

It doesn't, but you can download the app 'SMS Unread Count' from the market.

Then, add the widget to your homescreen. Make sure to change the type from 'sms' to 'gmail'

Then, voila, you have the number.

Not a replacement for the app, just a replacement for the shortcut :D

I use the "Gmail Unread Count " and love it. +1

It's great because you can use ANY email application you want, but still use that Widget.

This might be a stupid question, but I have SMS unread count set up to show me a count of unread texts and the Gmail unread count doing the same thing for gmail. Do I need both of these, or will one app take care of both?

Been using this since day 1 and has been working like a charm. And like Tomoko said, the icon is customizable which is a nice little feature to get for free. +1 on this

Thanks for the tip about the AppBrain app!
Wierd tho, as this is my first time logging into AppBrain via the DI, everytime I enter my Gmail username/pw, and click 'Sign In', nothing happens. The internet bar just sits there not accessing anything.. Grrrr... help! :)
    Thanks...

SMS Unread Count is the best, better than gmail unread count. Here's why. With SMS unread count you can use it for all 3. Messages, gmail and missed calls. Also gives a choice of icons, unread count text size. It's also been more reliable than guc. There were times it said I had unread gmail, but when I clicked on it nothing showed.

Can you use it for all 3 at the same time? When I go into the settings for it, it's only letting me choose Messaging, Dialer OR Gmail, not more than one. That's why I'm using both, but if I can do both with one app, I'd much rather do that.

I tried SMS unread count, but it would only let me select one of my gmail accounts

Just installed the Gmail Unread Count widget. Very cool!

But, how do I get back into the settings? (Without deleting the icon, and re-adding it)

Seems like that's the only way. It's kinda annoying, but at least you probably won't have to touch it again after you've tweaked everything to your liking.

Since these are all three different applications, requiring 3 different shortcuts, you have to add three copies of the SMS Unread Widget and configure them differently.
