In short, I have been running the Rubix rom for awhile now (1.5, haven't updated beyond that yet) and I have grown tired of things seemingly not working properly (for example, the swype keyboard VERY rarely allows me to quick-change a word with 1 tap since I have been running Rubix, but it did before hand, and other small things like that).

Almost every rom I have tried has had little bugs here and there that, while they are not showstoppers, they definitely make little things annoying.

That being said, I am still running the original leaked 2.3.15 from before the 2.2/2.3 (or whatever version it was) OTA update. Would it be worth my while to update to the latest OTA and just leave it stock? In all honesty I use my phone usually an hour or so a day, so I don't feel I will notice any potential speed improvements from custom roms, beyond that I am tired of updating to a custom rom, waiting for an update to fix a bug, then having an update two days after that which fixes a few other bugs.

In short I want it to just work as best as possible with little maintenance, so I figure going with the official OTA, rooting and removing small apps I won't use like the Blockbuster app, then leaving it alone is probably going to be my best bet for less of a headache.

Honestly the only reason I used a custom rom to begin with was because it was suppose to be faster and just a bit of my geek side shining through in an attempt to play around with my phone in times of boredom, but now I am starting to get annoyed by little things (for example, today a phone process, specifically only labeled as "init" was stuck at 70+% CPU usage, I couldn't end it with a task killer and had to reboot my phone to fix it). I honestly never really noticed any speed increases in my phone outside of Quadrant benchmarks...

So, my plan is to SBF flash back to 2.1, then do the OTA updates to whatever the latest is, and just leave my phone mostly stock from there, does that sound like a good idea based on what I want out of my phone?

makes sense to me. once you get the OTA you can reroot it quickly using z4root and rename a couple apk files to bak (like you mentioned blockbuster) to make them "go away" or if you use launcher pro you can just hide them from the app drawer. just remember if you decide to put a theme on it instead of a rom you will have to deodex the phone first.

Yeah, I do use LauncherPro and have hidden a few things I don't use even on the ROM I am currently using, I guess if I don't use the apps I could simply hide them, if I never launch them they shouldn't be using any resources other than space on the internal memory card, right?

As for themes.....I used to have a theme with one of the roms I tried, but that was months ago (back towards the first Froyo leak) and since, I haven't ran any themes. The only thing theme-wise I have changed was the LauncherPro dock, but you do that just through the options, no reason to deodex to change the LP dock. Any other reason to deodex outside of themes? Also, what's the advantage of having the apps zipaligned? Would it be worth my trouble to do that as well or no?

Others may be more insightful then me on this but... as far as I understand yeah they may use a little internal memory (which we have a ton of) and may even use a TINY bit of battery (probably not ever enough for you to be able to measure lol)
and as for deodexing, I would say if your not planning on running anything special on it (theme or rom) then I wouldn't waist the time.
some have said they noticed a speed change after deodexing (i never did) but i'd say if anything you'll notice more of a speed change by using a small overclock. 1.1 or 1.2
zipalign I have no clue about, sorry
again, this is just my .02 and many others on here will probably have better insight on this stuff then me.

Well thanks for the info, finished SBFing, updating, and reinstalling everything (did it all manually). Haven't rooted it yet, but unless I plan on overclocking it or anything I don't think I will need to. Still gets 1300+ in quadrant (1400+ is relatively normal for custom roms) and I haven't removed anything, basically did the SBF flash (to 2.1) then the OTA update (to 2.2 or whatever) and installed my apps again then benchmarked it.

Overall though it seems much smoother than the roms I have tried, maybe its placebo since it's a fresh install essentially, but I'll run it for a few days without doing anything additional and see how it goes, but everything so far has went better than I expected (no issues with SBF flashing, then updating, then reinstalling apps). I had probably 10+ apps downloading and installing at one point and I had no lag at all going through the Market getting the other apps started downloading/installing.

Since you are now on 2.2 ota I recommend you Apex 1.0.2.2 by Fabolous. I have been using it for about a day now and it's running smoothly and blazing fast! And also you can use the terminal to easily OC your phone.
