Are you running 2.1 yet? Do the official OTA 2.1 update and you'll save yourself the hassle of goldcarding.

yes you have to root , it does take 30secs but you will have to download the file which will take another 30secs , the whole process is real easy , i had lots of difficulty on 1.5 but that was because 3 had a patch on the phone , but once i got 2.1 xyro told me what to do and it was really easy , now for me to change a ROM takes no time at all .. i am confident i can help you out if you want or im sure master xyro would help you out too(trust me he knows his stuff)

oh dont worry about your phone breaking , i very much doubt that will happen , but on the very very very tiny chance it does its fixable

Well, to be clear, doing this does risk breaking the phone and it does risk voiding your warranty. If you make sure you know what you're doing before rushing into it, then you should be fine, but to say it's 100% risk free would be untrue. 99.9% of the time you can recover a bricked phone, and if not the chances are HTC will just replace the phone without much thought (so long as you don't actually mention how it got bricked of course :p).

But yeah, warnings aside, it's not a very difficult process and so long as you don't go off flashing stuff randomly you will be fine :)

Yes, you have to root your current firmware before putting on a custom firmware. All custom firmwares come pre-rooted too.

The sticky at the top of this thread contains a load of threads to help you, but the first step is to root your phone with Universal AndRoot.

EDIT: Of course it's legal :)

Make sure and read every instruction when rooting your phone and/or adding a custom ROM.

I learnt the hardway and bricked my Hero.....there was nothing any guide on the net could do for me. There was nothing any unofficial repair shop could do... I ended up returning under warranty, through my phone insurance....

They sent me back a Orange San Fransisco phone first... i told them i wanted back a Hero... This listened to a angry woman and sent me back a Hero... (only thing now is, they have forgotten to ask me back for the Orange phone mmmmm)

    Be Careful

    1) How To: Root the HTC Hero (AndRoot Method) | TheUnlockr That should work on any 2.1 GSM hero :)
    2) The radio is the software in control of wifi/phone signal/gps etc. So updating it may improve reception slightly. But unlike flashing a ROM, if a radio flash goes wrong you will brick your phone. If you want to play it safe, and your current setup works fine, avoid them.
In case you decide to flash it though, make sure you don't lose power. So keep it charged and don't pull the battery out under any circumstance. (Well, if it gets stuck for like an hour then you have no choice to pull it, but you know what I mean).
    3) No ROM is dangerous as such. But you wont go wrong by picking villainROM 12, which is based on 2.1. 2.2 ROMs are a bit less stable.
    4) Before you flash you'll make a 'nand' backup, which can restore your current firmware. It won't unroot the phone though, nor will it restore your original recovery image. If you need the phone completely stock, you just have to install the firmware from HTC's website.

No, I have not used it my self (I rooted ages ago), but I have seen lots of people here say they used it no problem.

There's lots of opinions and discussion here, if you want to read it :)

That's the stock recovery menu. Once you get a custom recovery menu on there, that's when you can do all the fun stuff :)

The radios and ROMs should be clearly marked on the page you're downloading from. I can link you to the right stuff if you tell me which ROM you're going for.

A kernel is a component of a ROM (that you can flash separately if you want). People do this because customised kernels can be more power efficient and can also allow you to overclock your hero. Mine is running up to 710MHz for example, rather than the stock 500 something.

Titanium Backup will backup all of your user apps and their data. It can do system apps too, but restoring system apps/data between two ROMs can make stuff a bit buggy, so I tend to avoid it.

Once you've run universal androot successfully, load up titanium backup. If it gives you error messages about root, try hitting 'Problems?' on the main page and download the new version of busy box. Once that's working, hit the second tab in TB and then press the menu button, then pick 'Batch' and then 'Backup all user apps'. Then it will make backups for all of your apps.

Stick amon ra, on the root of your sdcard (i.e. not in a folder).

Then download 'ROM Manager' form the market, load the app and pick the very first option to flash clockwork recovery. Then, once that's done, go back to ROM manager and use the bottom option to flash amon ra.

Then you will be able to flash a ROM, once you've picked it.

Do you want 2.1 (more stable, can be vanilla/HTC Sense) or 2.2 (faster, but still not bug free and only comes as a vanilla ROM)?

    No worries 40nintendo dude! :)
    It's all gud buddy!

I think once ur hero is rooted you can search for clock work app

    Here:

ROM Manager ~ Android Application v2.5.0.4 By ClockworkMod | Tools

Or search for it in the market :)

It will do it all for you dude but if i recall you need root first ;)

As for the best rom? U will have to find that out for urself dude as
we all like different things in life! :)
