Can the Eris do the Navigation like the moto Droid does?

Found a Eris for free with new account and that fits my price range! :D

Moto Droid is still $120 out of my range!

growing tired of my Moto Razar! 10 months past my new every two date

Thanks in advance for your replies...

Not yet, but when it's updated to 2.something it will be able to. We're supposed to get the update in the first quarter of this year.

Since you are concerned with budget... Also keep in mind that even though you are getting the phone for free, the additional $30/month data plan is required for both Droid phones.

And as sed said (heh...), the Eris should be getting an OS upgrade to 2.0 or 2.1 (same as the Moto Droid) within the coming month or two, which will include the voice navigation. The current OS 1.5 includes Google Maps, but does not do your GPS-style, turn-by-turn voice navigation.

For the record, this is a user forum and not a help desk.

The Eris does have Google Maps, but does not have navigation. Google Maps with Navigation requires OS 1.6 and higher. The Eris is currently running 1.5. It is expected to receive an update to 2.0 by the end of this quarter.

I just gave him/her the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was a "Thanks in advance for you replies"... Hopefully I was correct, haha ;)

I think I just threw up a little.

Every time OfTheDamned posts you can almost feel the testosterone level go through the roof. You guys really need to find a hobby other than you Eris and OfTheDamned.:D

To clarify a bit, you can already get directions from Google maps, and you can use GPS to see your location on the maps, and update those directions based on your location. What you don't get is a voice giving you turn-by-turn directions, but our upcoming software upgrade will give us that, as well.

I don't know if you said it or not. I'm guessing not by your reply.

What did you expect from a bunch of guys that frequent a forum about tech stuff? Admittedly I was probably one of those people many years ago. Most of us eventually grow out of it.:D

You might be able to acellerate that process by changing your profile pic to a pic of Susan Boyle.

No one wants to see that... crazy singing cat lady....

On topic, it is also worth noting you can buy very good GPS software for any android phone. The Google navigation requires a persistent 3G connection so if you loose signal, you loose navigation, where as a dedicated GPS app doesn't (the apps are stored locally rather than streamed)

I have a little navigation rant that might be slightly off topic but...here goes:

I was originally going to get the Motorola Droid but the VZW lady talked me into the Eris. This was long before I had any clue about smartphones in general, let alone the droid OS. (I spent the past 3 years in Germany with a prepaid cell. I was starving for technology!) Soo I really wanted the hard keyboard and the Googlemaps navigation. I bought my phone in early December, from a NH Verizon. She swore to me that 2.0 would be pushed on the 11th of Dec (LOL right?)
So I am a little bitter about the navigation situation. I am brand new to Maryland and navigating is fine if I have someone with me, but by myself it's a pain in the ass. On top of that, my German GPS is so old (4 years?) that it will not work in the States.

I'm still debating if I should write them a hostile e-mail. She also didn't mention the $30 per phone data plan. She skimmed over a lot of details that would have been nice, none of them would have been deal-breakers, but still.

    /Rant

If you need a free GPS solution while you're waiting for 2.0 you could try Waze. It is free and the user input is pretty nice. It does turn-by-turn with voice and has helped me avoid a ton of traffic. I would have been over an hour late for work this morning without it.

Also, I would write or call and complain about being mislead like that. I am surprised to hear that and Verizon rep was pushing the Eris over the Droid though. I actually had one rep almost start yelling at me when I told him I was more interested in the Eris than the Moto. A salesperson trying to give a customer guidance is a great thing, but only when it is based on fact.

Was the store you went to a corporate store or was it one of those licensed retailers?

In my experience the licensed retailers are less informed and they are also more likely to give you a used car salesman pitch just to make a buck.

Thanks OfTheDamned, I'll check that out! It was a corporate Verizon, but my silly husband wanted the BB Storm 2 and it was during one of those buy-one-get-one promos and basically if I wanted my phone to be free it had to be the Eris. I told him the Storm was getting shitty reviews....I wish my husband did his research like I did, though, because he ended up exchanging his Storm 2 for an Eris a couple weeks later and defeated the whole "free" concept.. but hey, at least I was right lol. So she was pitching the Eris because buying 2 phones at full cost would have been a deal-breaker for us poor folk.

That makes a little more sense with them pushing the bogo.

If it was a corporate store then you should call customer service. Believe me, they want to know this stuff. I had an issue at a store where people were being VERY rude to my girl and I. They must have had several complaints at that location because I went in the following week to get a case and all the people had been replaced. I was told, by a CSR, that they fired the entire store from the manager down. Verizon really does pride itself on customer service and they get really upset when it is a problem.
