Google Maps/Navigation vs Apple Maps

Afaik Google withdrew from their deal with Apple/iOS to provide their maps for iOS devices. Part of the war for the monopoly of the mobile space. So then Apple was up shit creek without a paddle and had to find a new source for maps. They found Dutch mapmaker TomTom – which used to be market leader in turn-by-turn navigation together with Garmin until the rise of smartphones ruined their market – which was only too happy to make a deal with Apple.

I sincerely hope nobody wins! Because if one wins that corporation will have a monopoly, which is always bad for consumers and will stifle progress! Exactly what Apple is up to* with their dozens of court cases in just as many countries trying to get sales and imports of Samsung, HTC, LG phones (and others) banned.
Of course Google is exactly the same: trying to get a monopoly by hook or by crook.

*Apple's iPhones 1, 2, and 3(GS) were industry leading innovative smartphones. The iPhone 5 certainly is NOT. Everything that was presented as new in the iPhone 5 had already been available in Android phones. Sometimes for years! Clearly Apple's focus on product innovation is lagging. Understandably, because they are now focussed on 'competing' by litigation, and apparently they can't do both simultaneously.

For now Google Maps is the best but who knows what will happen in the near future.

The maps are easy to get, satellite images can be obtained from geoeye.com or similar services, maps which are far more detailed than Google's are available if you know where to search.

What makes the difference with Google Maps is the services that comes with it like for instance searching for people and businesses etc..

AlvarezLuis - not sure where you got your information, but Apple dropped Google, not the other way around. Basically Apple didn't like the fact that they were dependent on Google for maps, so they developed another alternative.

That's what Apple likes you to think, because they simply got egg on their face and tried to somehow save some. Face, that is. You see, their/your story doesn't make sense: Apple would have willingly sacrificed a great deal of the quality of the user experience to get more independent? On just the maps issue? How plausible does that sound?
