My phone has been unsuccessfully trying to download the update for googlemaps.
I've tried stopping, and restarting but it still won't work.
Is anyone else having this problem? And is there a way to fix it?

Not with Googlemaps. But I'm having that problem with Taxi Magic. In fact, it shows it's downloading still...And I started the download on TUESDAY NIGHT!!

Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All - Market - Clear Data. Fixed.

Do you by any chance have a theme installed that themed gmaps?

I have that happen with every app now. The way that works for me is to start the update, re boot the phone, cancel the update, then re install. Tried the clear market data thing, did not work for me, its frustrating to keep having to do this, but I think it stems from putting apps on the sd card.

For me I had to long click the app in the downloads page and hit delete/cancel. Then go to maps in the market and re install.
