Ok just got the Hero and I love it.My question is this,i have set my gps to off mode also mobile to off mode and wifi to on as this is where i use the internet mainly. If I set the GPS to on does that incur charges from Orange while in wifi mode or is it linked to my wifi connection.

    Cheers hope this makes sense

No. GPS is free, it doesnt use wifi or your network.

Using online maps will "cost" you data.

Good point - knowing your exact position isn't much use unless you know where everything else is relative to you.

If you want to use GPS without any data charges then you need to make a one-off purchase of navigation software like Copilot. From then on it will be totally free.

There's Big Planet as well, it lets you use Google Maps offline. I haven't used it myself so I can't vouch for how effective it is.

Yeah copilot is great - offline maps are doubly important for satnav anyway as you cant always rely on having a data connection when youre edriving around in the middle of nowhere (i.e. when youre most likely to get lost and need a satnav!).

Bigplanet sounds great, i've tried to download it before but it doesnt actually appear to exist on the android market or anwhere else that i can find.

The cost, in money terms, depends on how much your network provider charges you if you exceed the free data allowance on your tarrif. In data terms it depends on how long you use it and how far you travel, as map data is downloaded as needed.
