Root [Guide] Best ad blocking no app needed for rooted phone

I just added the http://adblock.mahakala.is to my existing AdAway sources and it seems like not only the adds are removed greatly, but my phone is running faster ever since that reboot. This may seem far fetched but does this affect phone signal? because my Lte turned on after the reboot and where i live..
..i dont have Lte service.
The hosts file has no effect on reception.

Something else happened.

ads don't get blocked in apps with hosts file method from here or any other source.
Yes they most certainly do. Most of the posts above claim otherwise, even the moderator @EarlyMon says it does. There is obviously user error. You sure your rooted? Did you even try to edit your hosts file? Where are these other sources? Did you try an adblocking app?

Before making a wild statement and posting it, Back It Up with relevant information that supports your statement. You know, so its credible and doesn't get ignored.

Sorry, wasn't a general statement, was a questioning statement...
As EarlyMon said, it depends on the app. In my case it was Chrome datasaver and an unlucky string of apps that essentially bypass the hosts file and server the ads direct.
Other sources were/are Adaway, AdFree hosts apps and use of downloaded hosts such as this and script mod LSpeed.

adaway has issues as well. a number of sites still display ads and the host files at least in my use do not seem to have been updated very recently and if they were nothing of significance has been added. as for moab, well it seems at times it blocks to much. but i still use both. because the alternative is ADS...lol which i refuse to look at.

just use AdGuard https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html does great job on ads + malware and firewall protection. can't beat it for overall protection on rooted or non-rooted phones. use's a pseudo VPN to do the job. give it a try imo. no fancy config to do just do settings setup and go. enjoy
Psuedo or virtual VPN is going to slow down connection, its adding another link in its path.

AdAway is the best option besides using Moab, which you can use by adding it as another source inside AdAway. Nothing is running in the background, just the host file. No proxies of any sort.

yes but AdAway has no firewall or malware protection like AdGuard has. worth it imo.

Im not understanding, but to each their own.

If your safe in your use of the Internet and installing apps, why do you need a firewall and malware app? They are basic placebos. Most of them will give false positives, depends whether or not they got flagged - for whatever reason unrelated to actually being a threat. They are also running (whether open or not) in the foreground and background, consuming resources and the battery.

If you want to really be safe (to be read as: not yanking your chain), you need to be proactive. Use apps (tools) that fit the profile of the necessary task. FYI this is the setup I've been using for quite awhile now and on 5 other devices.

_____
Prerequisites :

    • Doesn't run in the background
    • Doesn't consume resources
    • Is battery friendly
    • Customizable
    • Standalone

AdAway fits the bill.

The next 2 are dependent on others, in this case the Xposed framework.

MinMinGuard by FatMinMin, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49112940 which will catch the ads that could have slipped by and eliminate the black space left from the blocked ad.

AppSettings by Tungstwenty (very respected developer),
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-app-settings-v1-9-2014-05-14-t2437377
which we can disable permissions, plus all the extra things the app can do.
_____
Using those tools in conjunction will make for a smooth running, custom, user experience. It is our devices; we should control how they run, not some app that blocks what it wants to.

holy Fark thats a ton of work for saving a few mA's. Not to mention upkeep. Go read the AdGuard website u will see their benefits. Thje VPN actually runs on the phone so no lag they claim webpage loading actually speeds up.

All of them are/can be auto, except AppSettings. Besides takes like 30 seconds. There is NO upkeep.
Its not about saving mA, but having only what I want running.
