Try downloading "smsunread" . It works with Handcent.

i just use the stock message app with SMS popup. i have no problem with the stock message app. no need for it to look like the iPhone i used to have.

Just because it has that option doesn't mean that why people use it

that's not what i was getting at.
i, personally, don't want it to resemble the iPhone's mssg app.
one of the reasons i joined Android is because i wanted something fresh and new.

That's your choosing. The OP asked a question about why an app isn't working right. Not whether or not people like the way it looked. If you don't like it then don't use it.

Long press on the home screen and add it as a widget instead of long pressing it in the app drawer.

My counter is working just fine.. zero for no msgs and I had a total of 4 today that were unread (ESPN SMS sports alerts)..

    Maybe removing/reinstalling the widget?

ok, I'm r.e.t.a.r.d.e.d. Just figured it out. I was adding the "app" to the home screen not the "widget". just added the widget and it works fine. phew

This worked, installing the widget instead of app!

    Thanks!

I'm actually having an issue with sms pop-up and its driving me absolutely Insane!!!!!!! When I get a message, I press close and it marks the message as read so the notification in the status bar disappears but the unread count on the icon on the home screen doesn't disappear!!!!!!

Has anyone had this problem and is there a way to fix it??

When you have the Notification popup enabled, it will automatically count that message as read (unless you miss a popup for some reason. ie, out of service area, handset turned off, multiple messages at once, etc).

You can disable the popup by going into your Handcent App, Click the Menu button, Select Settings, Select Notification settings, remove the check from the Enable popup checkbox.

However, doing so will mean that you will no longer get the automatic popup on inbound messages.
