has anyone rooted and used the hero without flashing a rom?? even for a little while? my main question is: did or can anything go wrong with a rooted -only- phone? if i cant get the update anywhere ill finally root to delete the useless sprint apps but im happy with the OS as is...so im not interested in the risks that may be involved with flashing. thank you for your patience as im new to android.

no nothing will happen, many people do this...the worst thing that can happen is having absolute access/control over the phone :D

Please avoid pressing the "Divide by zero" application that is installed when you root.

I did root mine and run it a few weeks before flashing a ROM. I did this to get wireless tether and to remove the bloatware. I had absolutely no problems and eventually took the plunge and flashed Damageless, starting at 2.07.

    Haven't looked back!

The temptation to play with custom ROMs will be unbearable.

Ive been thinking a lot about flashing to a 2.0/2.1 rom...there are a lot of threads about hero's not operating properly after the flash. Please weigh in about the best rom to use. Which rom are you using?

Really? Google nav is way better than Sprint Nav, IMO. Have you tried google Nav yet?

Ive tried it. Id like to know how to delete the apps that are on there, that ill never use. I will be reverting back to an official fw, if it ever comes out... and then rooting again.

No offense, but in my opinion this is not a smart decision. You realize there is a very good chance that when Sprint Releases the 2.1 Firmware, they will patch the root fix. While it is true that it will likely be worked around eventually, you'll have to wait. The smart thing to do (again in my opinion) is wait. Once the official 2.1 is released, any little quirks/fixes that need done to the already 99.999% working 2.1 ROMs will be implemented. My advice, stay off the bandwagon of "It's new and official, I want it I want it." Instead, just hang tight. After all, patience is a virtue.

    +1000000

the Devs are all waiting for the official release.. once they get it in their hands (OK.. downloaded) they'll have updated ROM's released... most likely within a couple hours of the official release
