hello, longtime stock android user but now want to try rooting

So as the title says I've been an android user for about 3 years and love the platform, but have always used stock devices, never rooted. Rooting always made me nervous, but now want to try it. I'm currently using a Samsung Epic4g with Go Launcher EX and Hancent SMS. nothing to heavily modified. I enjoy all the different changes that are possible with Android platform. I'm also going to post the different issues that I have with my current device and with my wife's HTC EVO4g, to see if the community can help me out.
