I have a G1, with JesusFreke Cupcake installed. I don't have many apps installed.

My intrernet connection is showing constant activity! For hours at a time. I installed NetMeter and the red graph verifies this. It's a lot of activity. So much so that my phone gets *hot* behind the trackball. And my bettery drains very fast.

Is there any way I can see what process is using the internet? I was hoping NetMeter would do this, but it's not. I just shows a list of all processes. Even if I reboot the phone and don't run any apps it still sometimes does this. That sort of imples that it's a system process that's doing this, or a background activity that runs at startup.

So, any ideas how I can check which process is using the connection? Anyone else have a similar problem?

There are 2 apps you should probably have.... you'll need to download them both from the market first is (APPER) it will allow you to manage and see what permissions your apps have (inclidong battery killers and data killers) you can check it out here Cyrket - Apper and second is (log collector) it will pull your phones logs so you can see everything that it does you can check it out here Cyrket - Log Collector once you get everything sorted out let us know the outcome or the app causing your issues....

Thanks! I'll give them a try and let you know.

There are some processes running according to NetMeter that don't make much sense to me.

    (akmd)
    (kondemand/0)
    (events/0)

The others have package names which is what I expect to see in the list. I didn't google those names yet, so forgive me, but it's 2am and I'm off to bed.

Log collector is a pain, because all I have is my phone because I'm out of town. It eants to email you the log. Kind of hard to read it and navigate in the email composer. I'll find a real PC tomorrow to read it on.

Here is an entry for a download:

    07-04 09:50:48.902 D/GpsXtraDownloader(** 61): Downloading XTRA data from http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

But that file is only 37k.

This entry seems like a potential problem:

    07-04 09:50:59.802 I/SystemUpdateHelper( 61): Started a new update download: http://android.clients.google.com/updates/signed-kila-CRB43-from-PLAT-RC33.7f4b89d0.zip?tag=2

Hmmm downloading 32MB zip files just might monopolize my internet connection!

I thought the JesusFreke version of Android was supposed to disasble all over the air updates? Android certainly never asks me to install this update. I thinks it's getting downloaded over and over again. It'll take hours to get, then fail to run, then get downloaded again a couple of hours later.

I don't know what I'm going to do now. I may just wipe my phone and install the normal, non-root version. The only thing I'll miss is the ability to take screenshots. But first I'll poke around the web and see if this is a known issue, and see if there is a resolution.

Thanks for pointing me to the Log Collector! It was very helpful!

APPER is equally as useful and before you jump ship and re-root your phone you might want to take a look at the selection of builds out there, i have a page ( Android Build Downloads ) with "most of the builds" and there well over 50 versions of rooted builds to download... and you said you are running jf but do you know which version as he had 4 versions of the 1.5 (cupcake) alone... might be more useful to ask around and see what builds everyone else are currently using... my self i run Cyanogens' build cm3.6.1 and couldnt be happier with it...

Thanks for the link! I'll definitely check them out. I had no idea there were so many.

One thing I miss that's not in this build is Amazon MP3. I don't know why it wasn't included.

I found an update for JF using the JF Updater which brought me to version 1.5.1, I think. The problem seems to have gone away. Perhaps because the firmware version indicates to the update process that my phone is up to date, or perhaps because it contained a fix to ignore over the air updates.

    Thanks for the assistance!
