I've just bought a white box hero which seems to be an import. As a result it does support English but the locales are for Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Also it seems that Android market is not supported for that particular region.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make it think it's a uk version or to install the appropriate apps/locales?

Try downloading an app called More Locales.

    Thanks for the app :)

Unfortunately turns out to not be needed now. A friend showed me how to set up the MaDoCo ROM so I've gor the locales, marketplace and a bunch of other goodies.

Thanks for the help anyway :)

I have a similar issue. I use the phone in English, but I need to be able to receive messages sent in Thai, and also read web pages in Thai. I also need to be able to switch the dictionary in use for predictive text.

Hmm, maybe you can try the DroidSans Thai Keyboard app, or the CN Thai Keyboard app? I dont know if they'll do what you want, but its worth a shot.
