    dirtmouth,

Have you tried cleaning the trackball (there's lots of threads where folks have had problems and sometimes getting the gunk out will make it work).

Failing that, erisuser1 has written-up instructions for being able to backup, wipe, and flash without having to use a trackball at all: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/163423-flashing-rom-trackball-not-working.html

I tried it and it works wonderfully...you have to be ready to use the adb command from the Android SDK, though.

    Hope this helps!

The hardest part is getting your computer to recognize your phone via USB. If you have trouble, I can send you a set of USB drivers or look in this thread for a great link that Frisco posted: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/171365-usb-driver-help.html

Just down download the Android SDK from here: Android SDK | Android Developers (I assume you are Windows, so you'll just download this file http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r07-windows.zip and extract it to a folder on your disk).

You don't need the Eclipse stuff, plug-ins, or platform stuff (unless you are going to develops apps).

Then, all you have to do is start a Command Prompt, navigate to the directory where you installed the SDK, and change to the "tools" directory. When you plug your phone in (make sure you are charge-only and have USB debugging enabled), you might need to update your drivers. If an "adb devices" command returns something, then you are golden.

If you do use eu1's instructions, read them carefully and look at the example output that I posted...it makes sense once you get into it.

    Cheers!
