I have a HTC Hero that is about 10 months old.

The screen is not properly responding (have tried factory reset), it seems to think it is being touched at the bottom of the screen all the time.

    The phone is virtually unuseable.

Without phone insurance, do you think I can make a warranty claim on this phone? It is in near pristine condition so they can't say I haven't taken care of it.

I would definitely try it. What's the worst that would happen?

Yeah, if you haven't rooted/damaged the phone or anything and it's within warranty, this is exactly the kinda situation warranties exist for :)

OK, I called HTC UK and told them I needed a warranty repair.

They checked my serial number, and picked it up the next day using UPS.

I was told they would fix it for free, if it was not physically damaged and did not have any "illegan" software on it (their words)

It's a T-mobile phone, and I had put the generic official unbranded ROM on there, so I installed the standard T-mobile 2.1 build on there before handing it back.

I also kept the MicroSD card.
