Availability of an update to the Wildfire will be dependent on the wireless carrier. According to this thread in the Wildfire forum

Froyo was released to the carriers for OTA distribution. If your wireless provider, however, chooses to not release it then your only option might be the installation of a custom ROM. According to some threads in the Wildfire "All things Root" forum there looks to be a couple of custom FroYo rom's available...
